Shanks is what jumpstarted the entire story.
Shanks was on the first PKs ship, bet his life on the next PKs chances, and is doing everything to warn the world against the nega-PK candidate.
And, as per last movie's material, which Id admit is still noncanon FOR NOW, Shanks is linked to both the rotten stratum of society Luffys fighting against (CDs) and to the lore event the plot has been converging toward since Dressrosa (God Valley).
Shanks is not "just" a Yonko. Shanks is the only Yonko carrying on the good Ds will, while Kaido and BM were carrying Rocks' (bad D). WB just didnt care.

Don't tell me, "but the new gen has to always beat mid gen." That argument is a nothing burger compared to Kid and his tiny ass crew being up against an entire Yonkou crew. Kid has only three notable members with one heavy hitter? Cool. Shanks has eight (not factoring in Rockstar) notable members with three heavy hitters. The strongest heavy hitter has been hinted at being on par with Shanks. If you think Kaido was above Shanks and Kaido (with King mind you) only turned away from Shanks because his crew was present, what makes you think the Kid Pirates have a chance with them? This isn't even factoring in the clearly present Red-Hair Grand Fleet with the giant army that would've given Big Mom an edge over even Whitebeard. Im not. After knowing what luffy did morgans doesnt say "luffy will become pirate king" he says "well hes certainly a contender" and then says "one of the worst generation is going to rise", meaning he isn't sure whether it will be luffy or not but he knows it has to be one of the worst generation
