Kiri-sute gomen

The words Shiryu spoke after cutting down his fellow Impel Down guards during his first appearance. It was an expression used by Samurai to cut down those who were beneath them and perceived to attack their honor.

It gives us a bit of tidbit on the kind of man Shiryu is. How unhinged he is, as Kiri-sute gomen should only be carried out when an offence calls for it. The mere fact the Impel Down guards stood in his presence was enough justification for him to strike them. It tows the lines between Samurai and Tsujigiri (Crossroads killer who kills to test a weapon). However, Shiryu won't even entertain the pretenses. He wouldn't hesitate to strike Blackbeard down for instance should Blackbeard compromise his goals. However, Blackbeard is intended to be his captain, so should Shiryu attempt Kiri-sute gomen, it means he perceives even Blackbeard beneath him. And perhaps, everyone is to him.

That is what makes Shiryu such a deadly character and the perfect foil to Zoro.
