For Aramaki, it was to display his powers and beliefs. He beat injured King and Queen, was pressuring the Scabbards and was handling things pretty well until Shanks came, plus went on about his ideology regarding absolute rule and oppressive ruling bringing order.
On the protagonists' side, he was here to show an Admiral isn't something Luffy, his crew or the alliance will cower at. Wano residents did their best protecting their nation and whilst they didn't succeed on their own, they put up a fight and Momo showed off a strong attack and the capacity to frustrate Aramaki and destroy his tree-man.
He'll show off more in the future, I guess.

Totally agrees with this. You are really the best in even elaborating Oda's intentions for the "sh*tty plot twists". Lol
Though Shanks entry is also in most nonsensical way (like coming and going without any motive), but the ending he gave to Wano is is the best. Aramaki showed marines stand on Kaido's ruling while if another emperor shows up than he has to run away again(Akainu and Kizaru talking about Samurais as well). Marines should stay away from this land.

Actually Oda hit 3 birds with one stone here:
1) revealed the last remaining admiral and his edgy personality. Imo its not trivial that oda decided to do that now. He wants us to realise that they arent that special anymore since straw hats are much stronger now. Remember all pre timeskip admirals were so cool and much stronger than luffy but aramaki isnt that cool, nor is that mighty compared to straw hat.
2) showed us that momo can protect wano which instantly means that having defeated kaido wont be for nothing and that yamato can actually leave the land in momo's hands(and thus joining the straw hats without remorse).
3) hyped shanks who will play a crucial role in the final saga as well as promoting the new film.
Honestly the only think i didnt like that much about the last chapters is that oda didnt specify why shanks was there. Although i think he foresaw that the marines would do sth dangerous so he wanted to protect the straw hats.
