It's in the realm of possibilities yes.

He chose a peculiar moment to do the assault which is interesting. It almost looks as if didn't have the balls to do it without taking advantage of the fact Whitebeard was focused on Ace and the war, which would dehype Kaido.

I doubt he went all the way to marineford to kill Ace, whom was already captured for execution, because he punched a statue...lol
