It was most certainely just a plot convenience to justify Big Mom being nerfed or her being out of control at times when the BMP should have been capable of exterminating their enemies, or maybe Oda finally realized how how annoying and horrible of a plot device it was and decided to not use it again in Wano.

It only kicks in if the food she is desiring at the moment is not available. She was perfectly fine at the Wedding with that giant cake sitting right in front of her the whole time, and she was anticipating eating it. It's wasn't until the cake was destroyed and she couldn't have it, that her hunger pangs kicked in.

Same thing with the croquembouche. She wanted it, but there was none, and thus her hunger pangs kicked in. On Wano, the only food she was desiring was Oshiruko, and she got to eat it.

If that was true, Oda could have skipped both the hunger pangs and the bad end musical that cancelled out the convenience.

Hunger pangs are rare and only happen when she can’t get access to whatever food she’s craving. Lately she’s been served the red bean soup she’s been craving by the bucket full so there’s no reason for her to get a hunger pang.

Right, the plot heavily implicates since the times of FI that Luffy will presumably be a main player if not the sole one against Big Mom. I would be extensively surprised if he managed to beat her this very arc or that didn't happen.
