Oden is big fish in small pond. As soon as he joined Whitebeard Pirates, he got instantly overshadowed by bigger fishes called Whitebeard and possibly Marco. As soon as he switched to Roger Pirates, he got overshadowed again by Roger and Rayleigh and possibly Gaban and Bullet.

And when Beast Pirates invade his little pond, he got overshadowed once again by bigger beasts called Kaido and King and possibly Queen.

That's true, although Bullet certainly didn't overshadow him since Bullet isn't canon.

He’s definitely been portrayed at points as a real scoundrel and incredibly unsympathetic...but I think we’re meant to root for him in spite of that thanks to his sacrifices, both impending and already seen. I do get where you’re coming from, but we’ll be out of the flashback within the next couple of chapters anyway.
Yeah, I don't think Oda means to paint Oden as a bad person, but to show us how impulsive and thoughtless he is. He spent his entire youth doing whatever he wanted -- in a way he had "affluenza" not unlike Doffy or other spoiled people who grew up doing whatever they wanted. He just gets whims and does whatever he wants, like taking over brothels and whatnot. Then he joined WB on a whim, abandoned that when he heard Toki, then joined Roger because "hey why not?" and acted like a dick to his retainers just because he's kind of selfish and impulsive. Now he's attacking Orochi all wild as hell jumping out of windows and not listening to people who told him to stop and listen.

So either that impulsivity is going to be the reason he gets killed, or Oda is going to give him a moment of realization and he'll sacrifice himself.

Someone recently posited that Kiku could be the traitor on the basis that Oden was the reason her brother left Wano AND the reason he never (presumably) came back...there are worse motivations to betray your master than losing the only biological family you’ve ever known.

Edit: For (my own) future reference, this is my 666th post on the forum 😈👿
