There's actually a really great chance that we're going to see Prime Whitebeard during this flashback.
Oden is continuously failing to enter sea, probably because he doesn't know shit about navigating and the waters around Wano are fucked up. The Whitebeard pirates went to Wano and that's were he was picked up alongside his retainers.
41 years ago Newgate is still a Rocks pirate, so I guess that happened years after Garp/Roger whooped some Yonkou ass

Prime WhiteBeard and Prime Roger and the reason why they were mesmerized by Oden's strength, ( and also probably know the reason why Rayleigh was wearing Mihawk Type Cape... haha ) and 39 years ago is just before Rocks getting disbanded so... WB will likely meet Oden years later after his crew becomes big enough to assign commanders for them since Oden was assigned 2nd commander.... maybe the reason WBP could compete with Roger Pirates was actually Oden since as we always thought Prime Rayleigh likely was much stronger than Young Marco and so Oden was compensating the Gap and he was Rayleigh's opponent in their fights, Marco, Jozu and rest were young and probably got Scopper and others

Nothing was stated about Oden's strength... Oden was strong and white beard and Roger liked him but it's not confirmed that these two things are related like that...nothing about Roger and white beard liking him BECAUSE he was strong
