So in Bleach there is an individual who was pretty much kept a secret or in the dark as far as their true prowess went. Even when shit was hitting the fan, this person was never allowed to fight by the Commander (can make couple speculations as to why). The person I'm talking about is the one who was renowned as the Strongest Shinigami, Retsu Unohana. Unohana's big moment in bleach was when she unlocked Zaraki's full potential and making him the next "Strongest Shinigami". It is in this crucial fight that Unohana makes a statement that I felt described the essence or in fact the existence of Dracule Mihawk in One Piece:

What we know about Dracule Mihawk is that he has the ambition to be the strongest and seek the strongest above him if there is any, but there isn't, which is why he considers himself to be the one standing above all swordsmen of One Piece (stronger than his ex-rival Shanks). Overtime his boredom led to him becoming part of the Warlords... and as he was waiting for somebody to arrive to be stronger than his ex-rival Shanks to fight them.. he meets this young man in East Blue. Initially he treated this young man like he was garbage, not even taking him serious in the slightest.

However, upon seeing his ambition and willpower he saw something in that young man, he became impressed.

After seeing that ambition and willpower, he made a crucial choice. Whether he should step on this young man like a bug (like he had with many others in the past) or whether not to. And the choice he made was to not kill the young man.

Now why would somebody who considers himself the strongest make such a choice when somebody attacked him like that and showed incredible killing intent.. It could be pity, it could be simply mercy, or maybe he was bribed to.. but no that's not why Dracule Mihawk did it. He did it because he wants to see the young man grow:

But then the question becomes why does he want to see Zoro grow strong? Could it be just for the hell of it? Could it be just for entertainment to see how far he could get? Well it's none of those reasons. He wants to see Zoro grow strong because he, just like Unohana, had met the "next strongest". He sees Zoro's potential in surpassing him, which is why he even poses him a challenge in encouraging him to surpass him. He is so certain that this young man that he had met that day would rise to his level and beyond that he tells the young man that he will wait for him at the top for however long it takes for that young man to come and surpass him!!

Then as time passes and the young man begins climbing, Dracule Mihawk meets him again and this time Dracule trains Zoro personally himself, while Zoro is still aiming to surpass him:

Now let's take a look again at the quote by Retsu Unohana:

"Because when the strong finds the next strongest.. one can no longer swing one's sword for one-self. The tip of the sword will always be pointed either toward killing the next strongest... or toward nurturing them."

Dracule Mihawk the strongest swordsman in the world, found the next strongest in Roronoa Zoro. He had two choices; to point the tip of his sword in killing Zoro who he believes will be the next strongest or use the tip of his sword to nurture Zoro to becoming the next strongest... and he picked the latter.

The Strongest Swordsman who uses his sword to nurture the one he recognizes as the Next Strongest Swordsman..that is the role/existence of DRACULE MIHAWK!!

Makes sense. I hopethe fight between Zoro and Mihawk will be amazing at the very least similar to that of Kenpachi and Unohana

Overtime his boredom led to him becoming part of the Warlords... a
No, he became Warlord because Shanks talled him so.
stronger than his ex-rival Shanks
He's better swordsmen than Shanks but he isn't stronger than him. Shanks is exponentially stronger than Mihawk.
But then the question becomes why does he want to see Zoro grow strong? Could it be just for the hell of it? Could it be just for entertainment to see how far he could get? Well it's none of those reasons. He wants to see Zoro grow strong because he, just like Unohana, had met the "next strongest". He is so certain that this young man that he had met that day would rise to his level and beyond that he tells the young man that he will wait for him at the top for however long it takes for that young man to come and surpass him!!
He came to east blue in order to see the chosen one (Luffy) about whom his Capitan tolled him before, he met there the crew member of the chosen one and decided to test him, he didn't kill him there because Mihawk doesn't kill innocent people, he inspired Zoro to become a great swordsmen and surpasse him in the same way how Shanks (Mihawk's captain) inspired Luffy to become a great pirate and surpasse him.
Then as time passes and the young man begins climbing, Dracule Mihawk meets him again and this time Dracule trains Zoro personally himself, while Zoro is still aiming to surpass him:
He didn't meet Zoro it was Kuma who sended Zoro to the same place where Mihawk's home is located. Mihawk trained Zoro since Zoro was begging him to do so and Mihawk didn't refuse since Zoro is the right hand man of the chosen one.
that is the role/existence of DRACULE MIHAWK!!
Mihawk's role is simply to be a dream of Zoro, a reason for Zoro to join Luffy's crew and have an end goal for his character.

When did this happen?
When other people can assume that he became Warlord because of his boredom I can assume samthing else. You don't become a government dog because you're bored, There are a lot of things more fun than being a world and less humiliating.
It is not an assumption...afair, it was mentioned in VC or data books, it stands true unless manga says otherwise....since it didn't happen, the fact that "Mihawk joined warlords because he was bored" is true and has more weight than to your assumption....

I enjoy the cross series posting. We should do more of that. On a side note, Unohana and Mihawk would be a funny duo together.

Agreed though, whether it be for his own boredom or for the sake of seeing someone's potential fulfilled, Mihawk's taken a very similar role. I've seen some people say this reinforces Mihawk dying and Zoro avenging him, but I don't see it. If anything, I think this ties them together and will force a confrontation. See if the student can surpass the master.

I do not consider VC as a solid source of information but since you believe they are I wanna ask you, where it says that Mihawk became Warlord because he was bored?
