I have always expected a classic glass cannon (obviously in the boundaries of how a top tier can be not particularly resistant, but still). I expected a fighter all based on a very powerful offensive and evasion thanks to light speed.
Instead, we found ourselves in the presence of a defense specialist, it seems.
I don't know what is the biggest surprise between this and Aokiji being a brawler.

True, but could be both.
Haki is probably the first thing, also because of the hype it has. In fact I think Oda is going out of his way to give Admirals not only OP fruits, but also top-level haki and other "styles"/specializations. For Fuji CoO, then Aramaki maybe incredible CoA, then Aokiji, then Kizaru.
Obviously we have known since MF they had top haki, only some blind agenda-driven moron denied that, but this goes beyond the general base for top-tier haki.
Btw, sometimes pop up the thing about fusing haki with the "element", so maybe that could be the trick. Haki fused with light, more or less.

You can have adcoa yet your hardening is still weaker than someone's else hardening
Having all ryuo =/= being on the same level with it
You wouldn't claim Kinnemon ryuo is equal to Kizaru or Oden's even though they all.have it

Yeah, there was all kind of sensless gibberish around them.
First, there they had no good haki, even if we saw them having great haki even back in MF.
Second, that they were physically weak, even though Akainu did what he did with one leg against WB bisento.
Third, that they were only DF-reliant (that's for all points, really), and now we are starting to discover that they even have other styles.
I think Kizaru's fight will be the end of all this headcanon.
