We know John was killed by his crew. Then somehow: Kid gained his DF, uses his DF the same way as John(creating metal arms), and has the same Epithet as John.
There’s more than a passing connection here. When a character uses the move of another, there is typically a close relationship between them. See:
Hence I think it’s likely that the founding members of the Kid Pirates were part of John’s crew. John might have taken them in as apprentices. Then the mutiny happened, John died, and Kid got his fruit and became the new “Captain”.
We might legit see this flashback in the manga, as Captain John’s treasure was built up since pre skip. It might actually be something very important.
