Character Discussion The most oppressed man on the seas?

Nothing that has ever existed has ever had free will in the metaphysical sense of absolute self-determination. Just as Luffy would not exist without being born, he would not be here to enjoy being pirate king without intervention from billions of variables that rule out the illusion of autonomy.
That takes away exactly nothing from his lived experience. All humans in reality and all fiction are completely determined. You have never experienced the present, let alone controlled it.
Straight yapping.

Show me some inanimate object choosing me to a world saviour.

Show me a stone depicting me taking a shit tomorrow, 800 years ago.

No one is truly free no, but no one is truly as oppressed as goofy.

It's a general prophecy, not a play by play for every single action Luffy takes, he still has free will and choices, and besides, we've known that prophecies like this have existed since all the way back in Fishman Island, why is it suddenly now an issue? Did you just need an excuse to try and shit on Luffy?

I think the prophecy is somebody in the past seeing visions of events that'd happen in the future, akin to how Madame Shirley did, and simply wrote em down.

No different than how how future sight work. Doesn't mean a person is oppressed to do those things. Everything is happening with Luffy's own free will.
I agree with this up till the point of the BS Nika resurrection crap in Wano.
Everything up to that point was indeed conscious action from Luffy. Having the fruit awaken him and have him laughing his ass off like an idiot is still the worst decision that Oda has made till date.

And they had the nerve to laugh at Naruto’s prophecy!
I was one of those, and I’m still pissed off that Oda went this route.

With all the hype lore piece has just dropped in the latest chapter, I wanted to look at what this means for Luffy personally.

The ancient people or the original joyboy are shown to be able to foretell what may happen in the future, or predetermine what will happen as seen in the mural. The events have yet to pass, but they've already seen or set in motion what will occur in present day at least 800 years in advance.

Imu and the Gorosei are shitting themselves of what is about to go down as this is an inevitable war, and an inevitable defeat on their part "the sun will return once more" "surely this time, they will meet again" Whitebeard also calls them out on this on his dying breath. That's why the WG have been desperate to fight against this for 800 years.

For a man who aims to be the pirate king on his own terms
what does it mean for Luffy?

Ever since he was groomed by homeless Fingerland and forcefed the fruit by the fruit itself,
he had already been locked in an inescapable destiny.

Every island. Every opponent. Every choice. It has all been for naught but stepping stones in his destiny to be saviour and his showdown with Imu. For a man who wishes to be the freest, his whole life is just an illusion of free choice. It all points to one ending.

For the man who wishes to be free, he's the most oppressed character in one piece. And that's just really sad.

Luffy was always destined to be the one who frees the world from tyranny. In that way you can say he can not be trully free being predestined to do something.

Tbh I doubt oda thought this far ahead when he was writing the who free thing.
