I have a hard time believing Nika never existed because the fruit needed a desire to be born from. The fruit can’t create Nika because the fruit can only be born from the people’s desire for Nika.
I think Vegapunk is clearly saying that the power a fruit carries does not need to have actually existed prior.
Whether the fruits are a literal manifestation of people's wishes, or an ancient technology, mythical zoans can be based on things that don't actually exist.

Or maybe a 500-foot tall golden Buddha (theory: perhaps a reference to irl Buddhism?) participated in the void century. Nice one Oda!

I'm starting to think that originally there existed a rubber people, inspired by the Olmecs. They could all stretch; it was part of their lineage. What set Nika aside is the "sun" part, but I fail to see how he'd have achieved such power (unless he stretched his imagination to incorporate more natural abilities).
