Character Discussion The reason they didn't execute Ace immediately was so Whitebeard had a reason to hold back at Marineford

Because by that time Mihawk left. They were spent. Hancock left. Moria was proved to be too weak to be a warlord. So what remained was weak enough to lose to the RHP.

Otherwise they'd just off em there and there would only be two yonko post time skip.

Seriously, there is no good reason to let the guy with 2 fruits and the most powerful fruit in the world go away.

He is quite possibly your biggest future threat.
The good reason is that there's no need to risk losing even more resources, leaving more vulnerable to attacks.

Its no different as to how King alone almost killed BM and how Kaido didn't want to go to war with BM despite having the stronger force.

Having 4 Yonko around is the biggest waste of resources.

Killing Shanks right there would tip the balance. Pirates like WB and Shanks and BB aren't born every day. They are near one of a kind monsters.

The reality is is that fighting the RHP would have presumably been a loss or close for the marines.

Think about it. You have a guy with two fruits. One of them is a fruit that can literally destroy the world. He's also proven himself ambitious and a bit of a loose cannon.

Why would you let him leave marineford alive?

LoL no.
They kept Ace alive so the Weakbeard Pirates would have reason to fight and they will wipe them out at once!
But than Luffy and BB screw over the war plans and Coby crying touch Sengoku heart so when Shanks' ask for truce Sengoku accpet it.
Stop reading Loon Piece you loony!

"Plot has to be believable" , one of the wisest lines read here in a couple of years.
The war could have be ended in millions of different ways, but only one of these infinite scenario was chosen. The same apply to the non execution of Ace.

The truth is that the Marine, as a institution, won't fail without an all out war, with the whole piracy against them.
On the other side, the truth is that they were against two crews of monsters and wounded Akainu wouldn't have lasted much against a fresh Shanks. Mihawk left, Hancock left, the WB pirates were still there and the only reason they're that downplayed is that they were against the worst opponent to show your value: a world top 5 haki user with a Logia.
No doubt that the entire BB crew would have beaten the two legends (we're talking about a D, the nemesis, the only one matching Luffy Jesusness).

Synthesis: Sengoku and Akainu have been wise, they achieved the only goal they had with the less casualties possible. That counts for a "safe execution" thanks to the Vegapunk wall and the betrayal strategy (and the WB cancer plotline), and counts even more fore the interruption of the war that they have already won.

If they continued, piracy would have lost 2 Yonko (gained two in 2 years), but Marines would have lost a GA, 1 admiral, 1 Legend and countless higher ranks. Not the best scenario to face Big Mom and Kaido who would have caught all other territories.

And, Shanks isn't that threat for them, if it were Kaido I would have understood if they continued the fight, he wants to go to war against the whole world, but you don't risk your top man for a "pacific" Yonkou. They underestimates Teach, though.

Sorry for the length of my post
