Questions & Mysteries The Spirit of the Going Merry

#1
Ever since the End of Enies Lobby, I wondered if we would interact with the Spirit of the going Merry again, or Klabautermann as it was called.

I know it was a bittersweet goodbye when they had to let the going merry go, but inheriting Will plays a big part in One Piece. When Franky joined the Crew, he said that the Thousand Sunny inherited the good Spirit of going merry, but we have never seen her appear ever again since then.

Was this the only time in the One Piece Story that we have seen something "otherworldly" like an actual Spirit? The way Franky described it as a "Legend" among seafarers reminded me a little bit of the Sungod Nika Legend, that different groups of people used to tell each other and every time people seemed to have a slightly diverted interpretation of it.

Have other crews seen something similar? When they took good care of their ships, Whitebeard seemed to care when his ship got damaged during Marine Ford.

What purpose could a Klabautermann serve in the Final Saga, or several of them. Was it just a one time thing, and Oda will never bring that up again?

Feel free to share any Ideas & thoughts.

The Moby Dick wasn't damaged in Marineford, it was outright destroyed. I think that was a prelude to the end of the WB Pirates.

As for the Going Merry, its spirit is probably still traveling alongside the strawhats.

Oda will bring the concept back.

The main possibilities are the Oro Jackson and Joyboy's ship
That would be cool.
Perhaps if Franky buffed the Sunny by fusing it with Pluton to have a Gundam alternate mode body which he could attach to like Fortress Maximus.

He, Pluton and the Sunny could then do a mind-meld team up by communicating telepathically.
That sounds so crazy, but fun as well. Now I don't know much about Gundam, but I remember Oda drew something about Gundam many Years ago, he seems to like it.

Thanks for sharing. Damn, that looks pretty cool. I'm not sure if those giant sandals look more charming or silly though.

For Franky, Oda did design a giant robot in honour of his VA:

Plus there's also General Franky.

Yeah, thats a good Point.

Merry dead: act affected
1 arc later: nobody gives a fuck anymore
For real, Merry is the best Nakama you could wish for.

:kata:

A popular theory is that franky will recreate pluton to fight vs the og pluton when it falls in the hands of BB. He'll do this by upgrading the sunny, maybe while doing so we see it?
Interesting theory. It would definitely be a nice callback for Franky when he blamed himself for building the ships that led to Tom's death. Now he could use his knowledge to do a good thing and stop whoever would be in charge of Pluton. Because I don't believe it will fall into the straw hats' hands. Oda built up Caribou and Blackbeard for too long for that. Even crocodile could still want it. Who knows?

Maybe the BB Pirates will go after Shirahoshi first and, when they try to go to Wano afterward, the Cross Guild could have stolen the Pluton already. Or they just get both and give Luffy more reason to focus on Blackbeard. He still didn't learn that BB attacked Garp / Coby and Boa. That will be shocking news for him.

But yes, I would like to see the Spirit of Merry appear again when they have a great battle with their ships.

Hey, Oda definitely loves the mecha genre. He said in a past interview that he wanted to create a short mecha manga after the end of One Piece (fyi, nowadays it could be part of One Piece, considering Egghead arc and the possibility of a futuristic Laugh Tale arc).

...I mean...Brook?

But, yeah, okay, I get what you mean.

But, I doubt we'll see the actual spirit of the Going Merry, again. Once a "character" is actually dead, Oda hasn't brought them back, yet. Not to say it couldn't happen, if we do end up travelling to the Underworld like in The Mural. But, I doubt it.

It would make for a fun movie or OVA or anime filler arc, though. "The Ghost Ship Going Merry". I would like that. Especially as we're getting closer to the end of the story.

I do feel like the klabautermann, as a concept, will end up coming back into the story in some way.

Personally, my bet is that we'll see Gol D Roger's ship's klaubatermann. We never did find out what happened to Roger's Ship, the Oro Jackson. It was never mentioned to be destroyed or given to Scopper or Rayleigh or anything. My personal theory is that the Oro Jackson's klabautermann is actually The Man Marked By Flames. Roger's Ship iteself has been the one protecting the last Road Poneglyph this entire time, constantly sailing because it doesn't need to eat or sleep on it's own. Maybe with some help from whatever creature hatched from Roger's Mystery Egg to make the whirlpools. Constantly taking damage that it can't fully repair, thus giving it "flame scars" in it's "human" form. Constantly sailing so that no one "unworthy" of finding Laugh Tale can make it there without it's approval.

So, we might have ONE more Roger "crewmember" to meet after we see Scopper Gyaban again. That's my personal bet for how the klabautermann come back into the story.

Usopp will be able to summon the spirit and use its power :smart:
:watchout::finally:

Thats my new headcanon from now on. Merry X Usopp the unstopable force.

Sadly that concept looks like it's completely in the freezer now. I would have liked to see the spirit of the Moby Dick during the ship's destruction at Marineford with it saluting and saying goodbye to Whitebeard before disappearing.
Oh that would have been so great, if Oda added that in one Panel. It would have raised the emotional impact. I mean Whitebeard was on the seas for so many decades, a little tribute to his Ship would have been great. But I like to imagine Whitebeard saw something there that we didn't, when he said I'm sorry.

:josad:

I hope Oda gives us an Origin Story of the Klabautermann. It's odd that in all these years there were almost no SBS questions about it, only once in SBS 43, but it was just a generic question.

Yohoho, of course Brook and his devil fruit count as otherworldly too.

:milaugh:

Interesting, yeah. The Klabautermann of the Oro Jackson, if Oda didn't scrap that Idea could make for an interesting turn of events combined with whatever hatched from that Egg we saw on their Ship.

:hope:

Wouldn't mind a Movie or Ova about it either
