I was in a bit of confusion since zoro announced that he would be KOH. Because so far every title that we have seen is related to something tangible - king of pirates, strongest swordman, strongest man, king of the beasts etc. So what does king of hell actually mean - there is no tangible place such as hell - what is the objective criteria to becoming a king of something that doesn't exist.
But since watching the Yukai form and summoning circle of saturn, it crossed my mind that maybe hell is a real place in OP. And this specific part might be more related to Hinduism than Budhhism. So I have a few notions that I wanted to put out there:
1. Imu & Gorosei have the powers of the underworld & not the devil fruits. Especially since vegapunk said that it must be devil fruit, I think it would be wrong. According to hinduism, the people that die without performing the proper last rites, their souls wander in the underworld till their unfulfilled desires are completed. So Imu & gorosei's powers might be a manifestation of such evil desires as opposed to the Devil fruits that are also the results of people's desires
2. Zoro's prime form is ashura. In mythology, there are various species of underworld beings such as preta, naag, pishacha etc. But the asura are considered the strongest of them all - so one box checked towards becoming the KOH.
3. Since luffy & zoro r supposed to be the yin/yang sort off, they possess the souls of past beings. Luffy the joyboy & I assume zoro will possess the soul of either some past swordmasters or his swords. This I think will also also result in his eyes with multiple iris (maybe black blade too). As is a theory out there, multiple souls result in multiple iris. Luffy had to die to achieve nika's soul. That is probably what happened to zoro as well. He died in wano (grim reaper) and has now got his connection to the underworld. Nika being a god, would ensure peace in the human realm by taking care of the demons that have posessed the physical world & zoro will take care of the underworld.
4. Coc is linked to the astral body, the one linked to the true soul. That's why the blades of 2 acoc users don't meet and the attacks are much stronger, because u directly attack the soul. This is probably linked to the ability to not cut everything & voice of all things as well
#edit
5. This would also resolve the dilemma regarding the final opponent of Zoro. Zoro defeats Mihawk to be come WSS. And then Nasujuro to become KOH (If Nasujuro is part of underworld and not the human world, him being stronger than Mihawk wouldn't impinge on Mihawk's WSS title) - This would probably mean that Nasujuro is the strongest of all the Gorosei. And Imu is a human who has somehow gained control over these entities
