Character Discussion "Those aren't for threatening"

#5
Tbf oda most likely didn't had that much clarity when it came to shanks as he was drawing first chapter.

Hence in romance dawn shanks is written to be a pirate who can fight dirty.

Oda obvi changed his mind and he is written as a saint type of character.

This is also the case for Goofy
Jimbe unleashing Arlong on East Blue as a side effect of his promotion was seen as a crime
But Luffy freeing a shitload of Impel Down prisoners including ones from level 6 is totally fine
The crew does not care about either one at all

Luffy- idiot
Zoro- former professional murderer
Sanji- pervert to an extreme
Nami- thief, liar, greedy
Usopp- annoying, liar, coward
Chopper- pathetic, annoying, clingy
Brooke- former old time pirate (murder, theft) and pervert
Franky- pantsless weirdo, insane personality
Robin- former organized criminal, murderer
Jimbei- one of his former colleagues is a bad guy and it isn’t even his fault

So you choose to die on the Jimbei hill?

The difference is Shanks´s crew is ready to die behind their threats. I don´t even know how your interpetation is that Shanks is saying ¨don´t threaten people¨
It means that you don't threaten people once you've taken out the gun,
it's for shooting

It's really that simple. The whole idea is that they are supposed to be chill pirates (like chapter 1 shanks got attacked by a bandit in the bar and laughed it off) until they are forced into confrontation then they shoot and don't make empty threats.

You´re overthinking it. Shanks is pointing out that he´s putting his life on the line by doing that
The manga also translates it differently

Kizaru is likely stronger than Beckman and Shanks didn't use a pistol.

No-one gave a shit about that except for Nami's doormat.
