He appeared with a sword on a volume cover, and wielded a graded sword.
Luffy is a swordsman, for the same reason WB is, as YOU said ,a spearman, who only fought fodder with a spear.

How about Aokiji and Kizaru? Aokiji does have an ice saber. Kizaru uses his light sword against Rayleigh.
