General & Others We still dont know the origin of Rayleigh epithet

The name by itself is fine. The fact he was bestowed that name after he saved his captain from unnamed fodders once was underwhelming
I see what you mean, a more dramatic backstory would've worked better.

What would you have preferred? Him destroying a mountain range while fighting somebody, like Garp did whilst training to pound Chinjao?

His epithet in Japanese is Meio, which also means Hades. Probably refers to his lethality or implies that fighting him is one way to be sent to hell.

Translation: [Dark King] Those who chose to face him only win a one way ticket to the underworld. He may be old but that's how tremendously powerful he is.

I guess "Dark King" was a translation issue- it probably should be King of The Underworld or something similar, maybe?

Personally, my initial assumption before I had learned of this was that he got the name because he had the power to be a Yonko or challenge Roger, but willingly didn't.

Hence "Dark King" as in one who had a "king's" quality and power, but willingly chose to be in "the dark" of another's shadow.

Either keep it as vague as possible ("his attacks were so strong not even mountains could withstand them") or link the story to a much more meaningful moment.

Shiki, Garp and many Rocks Pirates had their beef with Roger. Any of them would have worked better than fodder to keep the story as similar to the original one as possible. A good old useless clash

Gaban excavating a tunnel through a mountain range over a long period of time just to reach something, save someone or avoid somebody would have been great too. This would have been my choice

I remember a very good OP theory from here that Shanks was the Yonko who had control over the underworld.

Pairing this with your idea could work, that way Ray could be the guy who helped Shanks establish his underworld empire, thus helping to set him as a Yonko and keep an eye out for Nika related stuff like the Gomu's whereabouts.
Yeah I really loved that theory along with @mmd 's theory for Shanks. Between them and Marco The One Piece Theorist, they've had the most awesome, interesting theories on Shanks.

Welcome to the final season!!!!
Season 1
You may have heard some of these reasons many times
I hope you don't hate me for this theory...I'm just trying to predict Shanks...I apologize if it upsets you
1_shanks initial design
Other friends say Shanks is like the Mafia.....I agree with them
strong world...I was able to find this design

Now I want to give an irrational reason....Similarity of Shanks and Yamato vivrecard

2_ace!
If Shanks has Roger's heir, why did Roger say that?
Didn't Roger trust Shanks?

3_shanks's flag
The similarity of the Shanks flag with baroque works

I do not know what the sword next to the skull means...I think elbaf pirate flag was like that
That's why I think Shanks is the head of a secret organization

Do you think Shanks does not respond to this disrespect?
Why did Oda choose the Shanks flag from among the Yonkos?
I think this is important information...Which shows the fight between Luffy and Shanks

4_Red Haired Pirate Crew
Shanks, Page #172
With new members joining in, this organization continues to expand further in size.
Shanks, like bb, hires a lot of people....What is the real purpose of Shanks?
Becoming a pirate king?
No, I think Shanks has another purpose
I still do not know why he explored all the seas.....I think he was looking for something special

5–Shanks is scary!!
Shanks, Page #173
Key Person: Shanks

The fearsome red hair pirate dubbed as one of the Four Emperors!!
One of the Four Emperors who reigning in the New World
The translation I was able to find
Even at the beginning of the story, Shanks kills easily....Shanks is scarier and wilder than we think.

6_red
The use of a red background is particularly ominous. Among pirates, privateers and naval captains, flying a red flag often meant that no quarter would be given.
Pirates of the Caribbean also used red (I read this in a post about pirates)
Red means violence.....We know Kidd, who is very savage and violent.

7_Shanks fighting style
Does Shanks use the power of Soru(rokushiki)?
We have seen Shanks move at high speed many times (Luffy rescue time And on this page)
He may have learned this ability from Ray or Gandhi
Shanks disappeared four or five years after Roger's death...We have no information about that period....Various things may have happened to Shanks

8_Roger's disease
I always thought Roger's illness was related to Shanks...Shanks wants revenge on roger for rocks

9_Peace
We know that Shanks seeks peace and tranquility...And we all know that Luffy is going to start a big war....Isn't this against Shanks's beliefs?
Roger was calm and only interested in sea voyages....He never wanted to change the world(At least until before his execution)

Oooooh yes I like this! Oda revealed all the Roger Pirates and their roles recently to think of it, there was an "Informant", a "Torturer" or something? Ah here I found it:
  • Scopper Gaban: Navigator
  • Moon Isaac Jr.: Tactical Officer
  • Crocus: Doctor
  • Donquino: Helmsman
  • Millet Pine: Interrogator
  • Rowing: Scholar
  • Erio: Informant
  • Spencer: Intelligence Officer
  • Petermoo: Gunner
  • Jacksonbanner: Musician
  • Blumarine: Shipwright
In addition, Shanks mentioned "the cook" when he suspected Buggy was stealing food, but it is unknown which crew member held this occupation.[6]

Hmmmm, "the cook"? Douglas Bullet? LMAO! Or maaaaaaybe Sunbell who is missing here?! If Sanjis equivalent in the Roger Pirates is the Fishman and thus not the the Wings of the Pirate King and aprt of Roger's "Monster Trio", that would be HILARIOUSLY ironic, especially given how much he's HATED Jinbei for the LONGEST time now including recently ofc! OH MAN!

I'm sure they had a previous doctor before Crocus, I wonder if it could have been Hiriluk or Kureha for example too?

WAIT WAS ZEFF THEIR FORMER COOK?!

Its the equivalent of Zoro's "king of hell"
he is a nice guy who willingly took on the role of this dark edgy cold blooded guy to make his captains dream come true

This the King of Hell Zoro parallel which we know Oda likes to push for future PK vice captain

That makes the title sound like an insult
In a sense, yes, but it depends on Rayleigh's motivations. As for Zoro, for example, he wants to be the World's Greatest Swordsman, so the Pirate King title -- even if a greater title -- means nothing to him. So, joining Luffy and "staying in his shadow" ends up being beneficial to him.

The thing is that Rayleigh didn't have any apparent motivation. Roger just came along, saw that he had a ship and invited him. I guess it could be developed in a flashback, but it seems that Oda really doesn't care (that's what makes me believe that the title just sounded cool and has nothing related to Rayleigh).
