Punk Hazard was once an island where the Ancient Giants lived and where many of them died, leaving skeletons on the island after the species seemingly died out a very long time ago leaving Oars and his family as the only known Ancient Giants left.
It's upon discovering these skeletons on the island that the World Government had the idea of trying to recreate these humongous beings for their own use and to make Punk Hazard the secret base of their Scientific Division with them trying to clone Ancient Giants with the DNA found in the skeletons or skulls or to use it to create a gigantification drug with no success.

That a big reason that motivated Garp to stay with the Marines for over half a century is because he looked up to a certain someone, or was even saved by a certain someone, when Garp was younger. Not to say that the simple reason of “I’m a Marine because I want to help people” is out of the question, but considering how a big reason that motivated Luffy to pursue the goal of Pirate King is because of him looking up to Shanks, it makes me wonder.
