How does this reconcile with "advanced CoA", or was Luffy just using basic Ryou up until now?

he used the concept of flowing haki and applied to CoC.....it could probably be penetration haki which can destroy inside out and barrier haki is just advanced form of CoA.....anyways we will get even more fleshed out details later (hopefully).....

There are 4 levels of CoA.

1) level 1:- enhancement haki (which post ts luffy used vs Pacifistas as confirmed by sentomaru)

2) level 2:- hardening (used by Luffy from Fishman Island)

^^ these were basic CoA

3) level 3:- barrier haki CoA (this Luffy must have been using since chapter 1000)

4) level 4:- internal destruction haki CoA (shown by Luffy first in the chapter in which act 2 ended where he blew apart a tree without touching it from the inside)

^^ these both belong to advanced CoA .

5) level 5:- now luffy has added CoC on top of level 4 CoA (coz unlike in the chapter where he blew the tree from the inside without touching it...in this case he is showing haki flame/sparks coming out of his fist (& not just during any haki users clash) ).

To summarize i think that Luffy was using level 3 CoA so far.

From this chapter (due to the hyogoro flashback particularly specifying the level 4 CoA) & now Luffy having unlocked advanced CoC as well now Luffy has directly jumped from level 3 to level 5 vs Kaido.

Question for the japanese expert. Is Luffy talking about the Thunder Bagua Kaido did in Kuri 70 chapters ago?

Cause that one didn't have the leaking haki before the attack that we have seen from Rogerbeard and Luffy & Kaido in the second part of this chapter.

Luffy says "Omae no kanabou kuratte, wakatta", that is a pretty straightforward sentence.

"I understood it [i.e. that you are using haoshoku to attack] getting hit by your club/when I got hit by your club".

It is not explicited if it was back then at the beginning of Wano or just the last Ragnarok attack, but from the context I would assume that he is just speaking about the last hit he received.

There's a level above internal destruction which is CoC + internal destruction, and that's what Luffy's using now.

I'm glad because it didn't make much sense how his attacks weren't fucking up Kaido like they were this chapter. I was wondering how tf you bridge the gap between that and Rogerbeard's Haki, now we know that there's a whole other level entirely.

yeah he referred to that attack in Kuri....he specifically said when I "first" time took a blow from the club...the first time Luffy took the club was in chapter 923

it was already combined, just look at roger/wb clash

oda already portrays what luffy is doing now to what roger/wb did with law saying "he isn't even touching"

Luffy was using Ryou the whole time until he saw what Kaido is using so Luffy imbued CoA and CoC together to make his attacks more effective.

I think Luffy was using internal haki, but just at a low level so it wasn't damaging Kaido very much. Now since he understands it better he can barrier is better and he can inject more haki into Kaido's

If we look at these attacks we can see how far his barrier haki extends from Luffy's body. They contain CoC haki.
