Powers & Abilities What if Luffy never gets devil fruit awakening?

#1
Most people assume he will get it, but part of me feels like he might just never awaken. Just because a power exists and Luffy could learn it, doesn't mean Luffy will learn it.

For example, Luffy doesn't learn rokushiki, or three sword style, or a myriad of different other powerful abilities that exist in the one piece world. Luffy doesn't use science and technology, nor does he use any sort of weapon. So why does he need to awaken?

From the timeskip, Luffy's fighting style has always focused on haki. Yes, his devil fruit exists but from dressrosa on, his haki started to greatly overshadow other aspects of his power. His strongest ability was gear 4th, a haki technique, and he soon developed advanced forms of CoO, CoA, and now CoC. Now we're in wano and Luffy needs one more power up for him to beat kaido.

We have no idea what this is but in 1014, this is what Kaido said(official translation):
So you infused yourself with the color of the supreme king but your use of it was crude and clumsy!!!
gum-gum... what was it again?
Right before Luffy got KO'd, he used a specific ACoC technique against kaido that was crude and clumsy. We have no idea what this technique is but given what we know about Luffy's fighting style, I'm willing to bet its a gear 5 or a modified version of gear 4th that infuses the gomu gomu no mi with haoshoku haki similar to how boundman infuses the gomu gomu no mi with armament.

Ultimately, while Luffy could get awakening in the future. Every power up he's gotten post skip has just been haki power up, after haki power up, after haki power up. There seems no end to this. Unlike Kid or Law, who have powerful devil fruits they rely on in battle, Luffy's fruit just isn't that strong by itself. So he relies on haki as his greatest power, similar to roger or shanks.

This is ultimately why I feel like rather than Luffy ever awakening, he might just get level 3 advanced haoshoku haki, whatever that is. Or perhaps advanced voice of all things, again whatever that is.

He's the main character and a devil fruit user, you don't need more reasons. Why wouldn't Oda give him awakening since he's quite literally the character who is going to be able to make the most use of it? Of course he will awaken, especially considering we have incoming plots directly involving devil fruits (Teach, Vegapunk and the story behind their creation).

maybe Oda has something better in store for him

Diamante is a Flag Man & he can turn the Ground to have Flag like Properties by touching it
So Luffy should be able to do the same by making the Environment have Rubber-Like Properties

You believe we will read Final Chapter of Luffy's Story who ate Gomu Gomu No Mi & he became Pirate King & World Savior & Among Best Fighters ever but he won't be able to do something that Gomu Gomu Fruit has? Ofc not

every devil fruit should awaken at some point, what's rare is the gaining the ability to affect the surrounding.

i'm sure that luffy will achieve awakening, but will his awakening be effecting his surroundings?

oda has been giving luffy every rare haki related ability, i won't be surprised if his DF received some op boosts in the future, he needs all the help he can get.

Who cares tbh?

He is not Logia so I'm genuinely afraid of how terrible and silly this might look.

He will probably get it but I don't think it's something that he needs af.

Fine for me, he wont be able to use his fruit power against BB anyway. And its even more badass if he manage to defeat top tiers without relying to his df power at all.

This. Someone needs to be willing to teach it to him. So far, only 2 villains have used it. Likely some of the Zoans this arc have it too, but its not something they are going to just openly teach Luffy.

I actually think Crocodile knows it, and when he and Luffy meet again, he's going to show him how to do it. Croc first talks about how his mastery over his fruit is years upon years of experience. I think the shit he does to the environment (removing water from literally stone and buildings, making quicksand, etc) is actually awakening. Hes also the person who talked about it back at Impel Down.

I do believe there is another major story arc coming with Vegapunk, SSG, Crocodile, etc that allows Luffy to properly learn awakening before the final arc. It's like how we knew about Mantra for years and Haki was thrown around as a concept for nearly 200 chapters before Luffy started started learn it (Shanks making everyone faint).

Well, its a manga and Luffy is the protagonist.

And the awakening of Rubber will be a main power in countering Teach Tremor fruit.
