Character Discussion What is so special about Zoro?

#1
What makes the Pirate Hunter, future greatest swordsman in the world, Marimo so special to be the second most iconic and popular character in One Piece?
Well I don't know about you but for me what makes Roronoa Zoro special is not its hype moments but how simple the character is, however, it fits well into the narrative.
Develop-I say simple because Zoro isn't the best-written character by Eichiro Oda, and there's nothing wrong with that. Zoro doesn't have a lot of flashbacks, he doesn't have legendary parents(or at least unconfirmed), because it's not necessary, his past with Kuina and his relationship with Luffy are enough for us to understand why he acts and how he acts.
His Will- what makes Zoro even more special, especially in the world of One Piece, is his will. his desire to become the greatest swordsman in the world makes him even more special, not only because it is the motivation and conclusion of his entire journey, but also empowers his fights. His fights are not just about a power he awakened or a technique he learned and surpassed his opponent, they also symbolize that swordsman is getting stronger and closer to fulfilling his will, since defeating a member of Baroque Works who turns to iron in Alabasta, until he defeats the first mate of a Yonko in Wano. Maybe that's why fans are looking forward to his rematch with Mihawk.
Zoro´s Swords-I like how Oda develops Zoro's relationship with his swords. Wado Ichmoji is the remembrance of his promise he made to Kuina and the first sword of his journey. Nidai Kitetsu recognized Zoro for not fearing his curse. The Shusui Black Blade which is a national treasure of Wano and was given to Zoro by Ryuma himself for recognizing its value (Zoro's favorite sword). And Enma, Kozuki Oden's ancient sword capable of draining the user's Haki where Zoro during the fight against King had to learn to master it, feeding it with his CoC, becoming the King of Hell.
Paralells-I like how Oda builds parallels between One Piece characters. Luffy with Roger, Joyboy. Teach with Xebec. Koby with Garp. Helmeppo with Sengoku(lmao). And with Zoro it would be no different: Rayleigh, Ryuma, Ushimaru.
I like thinking much more about how Zoro is an excellent character because of these factors, and not because of his absurd and overrated hype of humiliating the 4 Yonkous and Admirals together with his ACoC and his Rinnegan hidden in the eye(lol).
That was my thought about Roronoa Zol...Zoro.

1. He is one of the few human without DF that is able to achieve such awesome feats

2. He created his own fighting style, unique to him

3. He is the poster boy of hardworker (although he's not pure hardwork), befitting Japanese work ethic

4. He has abilities only so few people have it (Adv CoC)

5. His appearance is the tough, cool looking dude, full of macho.

6. Last but not least, he is written to be "never lose". Investing in him will always be rewarded with glories.

Aside from the ones which have been mentioned, I like the aspect of his dream (WSS) mattering only to himself and no one else.

A common criticism to the WSS title is Zoro seems to be only one who cares for it, but I see this element as a strength instead of a detriment. The fact that he becomes what he is today without a DF or a famous family (or a seemingly legendary bloodline) amplifies the fact that, although your dream matters only to you, if you have enough conviction for and to it, you can stand among the greatest in the world.

  • His accomplishment has been carried by hard work, not lineage
  • He is the only strawhat that faces the consequence from severe action (Kuma, Mihawk, Hakai), which makes story has tension.
  • He is the only Strawhat that seems to treat thing seriously when it supposes to be serious
  • His fights involve problem solving, not just cut harder, willpower, or just copy opponent skills on-a-fly
  • Strong integrity. Swordman at chapter 1 is still a swordman at chapter 1040. Unlike other characters who turn into cyborg or unlock irrelevant skills like telepathy or future reading

1.
Luffy: Hard work, talent, destiny, lineage
Zoro: Hard work, talent, destiny
Sanji Usopp: Talent, lineage
Other SH: Talent

2. Luffy faces a consequence too from punching a World Noble, his crew got annihilated and separated.

3. Zoro, Robin, and now Jinbe, is the "always serious" group.

4. Only 2 fights out of ~25 major fights, Pica and King.

5. If you're talking about haki, Zoro learnt it too. PreTS he is only use swordsmanship and Luffy only use Devil Fruit. PostTS, both begin to apply Haki too.
