Character Discussion What is the point of Koby as a character?

#24
I've been saying this for ages and I will never be tired repeating it: he's the Konohamaru of One Piece.

Period
Konohamaru was just Naruto fanboy from his village, he was never meant to have a bigger role, he wasn't pushed into big events, wasn't a part of and important faction (and even more important secret faction within that faction), wasn't trained by one of the strongest characters and was also an 8 yo kid.

Did you read Marineford? My god. How hard is it to read a children's manga?
And what did Koby do at Marineford and how was it significant for his character or the story? Please enlighten me.

Luffy's garp. Yeah, i know it sounds like a joke but it's true
Garp wasn't Roger's fanboy. He was actively chasing him, they have fought multiple times and ended up in situations when they had to work together, which led to him growing a huge respect towards Roger and vice versa. There is another character who parallels exactly that type of development with Luffy and you all know who he is.

Current Luffy no-diffs current Coby with his hands tied behind the back and a blindfold on.
Exactly. And people expect him to beat Hancock... :seriously:
If he had any achievement so far, even the smallest win against some sub 150 mil. bounty pirate, I might accept and say he has a small chance with the help of plot armor and pis.
I don't care if he trained with Garp. Real combat experience, beating strong opponents and overcoming nearly impossible odds >>>>> training.

.
I love smoker and would pay to see him as luffy's garo. But oda treated him like a joke Post ts and I think he is also old compaed to luffy( at least 40) since roger and garp have the same age and beat rocks crew together, unlike luffy that had law and eustass to beat rocks crew remnants.

Coby is also non ability user like garp, was trained by garp. And he is not like luffy that is already top tier at age of 19, none is. Coby will be top tier but likely closer to his 40s or later. And coby also promised to capture luffy or some shit.

The whole notion breaks down though as Roger wasn't a fruit user yet we parallel Luffy with Roger

:kayneshrug:

Also what has Coby done that's impressive? Beat a few fodder pirates. Smoker has gone 1 on 1 with 2 3 billion bounty pirates.

He's beat 2 Yonko.

And he told the Gorosei to eat shit and mocked a celestial dragon (Doflamingo) to his face.

Don't get more badass than that.

So far he hasn't done anything to impact the story in any meaningful way. If you removed him from the story absolutely nothing would change. Even in the first arc where had the most presence, he was just a tagalong and hasn't done anything (apart from screaming and crying). Fast forward 1053 chapters and so far he occasionaly appeared for a chapter or two, done nothing, and disappeared for the next 100+ chapters. To me he feels very out of place in the story, kinda like a fanfiction character, even more so than Sabo. Do you think Koby is really necessary for the story? What do you think his role will be?
To capture Luffy after he becomes PK and executes him, of course. :myman:
