Break Week What made Egg Head the best arc of PTS?

#61
Egghead has the potential to top Dresrossa, if Oda doesn't fumble in the end.

Contrary to what many are saying about how great and evil Saturn is, I am feeling it is kinda forced.
Gorosei were obviously gonna be villains in endgame, but they were previously always portrayed as more wise and diplomatic figures, who would rather keep not choose violence unless their govt is directly threatened.
- didn't show outward hostility to regular humans (in the past)
- expressed regret at what happened in Ohara, gave an out for civilians (who Akainu killed anyway)
- expressed concern at civilian casualties in Lulucia

I think Oda is trying too much to made Kuma as synpathetic as possible, and Saturn as detestable as possible.
Feels a bit like Charlos. But it worked for Charlos IMO, because he was just introduced as a spoiled scumbag, instead of a wise philosopher like man.
Obviously, there was obviously more to Gorosei than what meets the eye. But at least, they were supposed to play the part of diplomatic leaders outwardly, even if deep down they looked down on the regular humans. I mean, saying humans are insect to the face of a VA.....the optics of that.....

Anyway, my issue with Saturn aside. The way I see egghead, is the "glue" arc of the final saga.
This arc's role is to introduce and hype/buiildup the major players in the final saga, to connect them in an organic way to fit into the rest of the final saga.
Which is some of what Oda has done so far:
- Shanks taking out Kidd, getting poneglyphs
- Blackbeard taking out Law, getting poneglyphs
- BBP/Aokiji taking out Garp, build of Coby
- building up Imu through destroying Lulucia
- building up Marco/Weevil plotline
- Cross Guild introducing bounty for marines

What I hope from the rest of the arc:

- a major win by the BBP infiltrating Egghead: Let's be really honest, BBP hype is in the gutter. Yes they got wins, but wins that made them look kinda weak. I have far less hype in BBP now, than I had pre Egghead
BBP need a really good hype moment, and a major addition to their power. I say, BBP get York and builds something, does forcibly shenanigans to awaken DFs (at a cost maybe). Let's also hype up Lafitte by having him take down Jinbe or something.

- a major hype moment for Dragon and a big power play by the revos. Kinda self explanatory, they need it.

- Cross Guild getting a massive win, Mihawk getting a real hype moment.
Cross Guild is a YONKO crew, came out of nowhere to become one of the major players. But Mihawk aside (who himself is in dire need of feats/hype) and Crocodile (assuming retcon in power), they are fodder.
Oda has to justify their position as a Yonko crew, justify the need for introducing a Yonko crew out of the blue (aside from Buggy memes).
My suggestion is, have Cross Guild get hold of the final road poneglyph, them making them the key wildcard in the race to PK. Have Cross guild invade Impel down and get the level 6 prisoners including Doflamingo, while get Mihawk his power play (I'd have him take out an admiral and slice ID in half after freeing prisoners). Have CG recruit Boa (through Buggy/Rayleigh connections), Moria (through Mihawk/Perona connections), Weevil (cuz why not).
Addition of shichibukai and level 6 prisoners, would make Cross Guild go from the weak crew it currently is, to arguably the strongest Yonko crew ever.

*************

What I want from above, is to have a real feel that the three factors are forces to be reckoned with. I want to feel that these could guy really shake things up, if push comes to shove. That they have a real shot to achieve their goals.
Rather than feel like just figures to be taken out sooner or later to further the plot.
I am not sure now... Did the Gorosei hesitate following order in the episode like in the manga or not

There must be something else about eggheads outside of fights? Or is it only fights that matter to you?

I share the "forcefullness" of Saturn, but i see his caring about life more as a "why bother" than a respect for life.
I have a feeling cross guild exists only for 2 reasons:
Have buggy be pirate king in the end while Luffy achieves his true goals.
Give a reason to Mihawk to be where Zoro is at the end of the story.
Otherwise, i don't think they will have the fourth poigne gliffe.
It was more like a "I'd rather not" than "why bother" feel that I got from Gorosei in the past.

I'm afraid you're right about Cross Guild, but my wish is that there is more to it. While buggy himself is a meme/joke, Mihawk and Crocodile are not. Neither would be figures like Doflamingo or anyone else, if they join.
My wish is that CG becomes a legit powerhouse, the further pushes the meme of Buggy failing upwards by carrying his ass to PK status.

The episode is accurate to the particular manga character, where we saw none of the interactions between Imu and Gorosei.
Interactions take place many chapters later

Yup only fights matter nothing else. We all here for the fights no matter how cool you wanna try to look saying you are into lore and bullshit like that we are all here because of fights.

fights have never been that good in OP but especially post G5 i can't see them ever being even remotely good. This is a bleach situation here.

Speak for yourself, what you wrote is just sad.
:lusalty:
Said the guy trying to be cool as a fan of Gaimon and pretending to enjoy the lore.

Fights were always good in One Piece. This is a fallacy of DBZ fans so they can say DBZ has good fights while having shit lore and that One Piece fights are shit while having a good lore.

Luffy vs Crocodile final round is amazing fight. Zoro vs Daz Bones is amazing fight. Usopp and Chopper fight against Mr 4 and Miss Merry Christmas is amazing. Sanji vs Kuroobi is amazing. Luffy vs Enel is a great fight. Luffy vs Lucci one of the top best fights of anime. And many more.

Imo because the Yonko saga was entirely devoted to setup for the final war.

The pacing was horrible because the Straw Hats couldn't just be strong enough to beat the Emperors+Crews easily, or else the Saga ends too quickly (which looks lopsided when compared to BB/Shanks). So Oda had to inflate the power levels accordingly since 50k fishmen just keeled over in FMI. This was a choice, I'm sure he could have handled writing a higher power crew.

FMI is an example of the types of arcs we would have gotten if we had kept to the original plan. The crew arrives, low-mid diffs and does adventuring in the weird lands they find themselves in. Lots of lore, world building, and mulling over ideas. Of course Hody was kind of a lame villain, but assuming the same antags the Yonko saga is a relative breeze. This was traded for more rigorous exploration of the struggle to the top, and themes of changing eras in the world of pirates. We probably see a lot more Kidd and less Law too.

But Luffy has one last Poneglyph to find, and the great cleansing is coming. Another pleasant suprise to some, was that Egghead is feeling less like an escape/rescue arc and more like a first battle in the final war. While Vegapunk feels new, we've known about him and his activities for quite a while now. Killing him off as the first casualty of the war is an interesting move for sure!

Who knows, maybe Oda invested in the bloat and chooses to kill multiple of the friends we made along the way during the final war. I might not care for Cavendish all too much, but I kind of like the cut of Hajrudins jib (bro tried killing Big Mom young, he's about that Elbaf Life). I imagine theres a lot of side characters many like, and Oda's main issue with character deaths is that he can no longer use them later.

Now that the series is ending, its time for Oda to put his toys away. And a good way to discourage a return to your own world is by permanently removing/altering a *LOT* of characters.

Good Morning fellow members of WG.

I have a simple question for you guys, what has changed?
Going through Dressrosa, which was decent, Zou was ok, WCI and Wano, the last one mostly bad, I remain shocked by the quality change that we are reading since the end of Wano.
In 50 chapters we had more plot developments, cool moments, reveals and just in general good pacing than in the previous 150, to say a number.
What has changed?
How can the same author have such different outcomes in writing the same comic?

My personal opinion is that, similar to what GRM for Game of Thrones, with Wano Oda wrote himself into a "corner", but this doesn't explain the horrendous pacing of the first half of Wano.
Egghead arc is the best post timeskip arc because in Egghead, Zoro is stuck fighting YC2 Lucci, that way evil Zoro fans can shut up with their wank and I can finally sleep peacefully at night

Tbh this is what Oda meant by "making his character too strong ends the manga faster". I enjoyed the whole Yonko saga sans some low points (weddingu cakie, and Oden are my biggets Opps), but the pacing was glacial and my enjoyment week to week at times was destroyed.

It's why I'm fucking glad Luffy's trashing Kizaru and Saturns only keeping up with the perfect stall gimmick for the job. Some might say its Luffy piece, I say its a return to the classic OP adventure arcs where winning the final fight isn't some impossibly hard fight, but more a logistical task of getting everyone into position. Soon enough Agenda piece will call Akainu fodder because he's off fighting fucking Sabo to stop him from interfering in Luffy's fight. Expect Zoro to clash with Shanks in a friendly, and fight off Admirals from that point forward.

oc Imu/Blackbeard/possibly Akainu will be exceptions and will likely be slogs.

Bleach fight choreography was bad, but it got carried by how creative the powers were and the expectation to see new bankais.
