The Goat Marshall D. Teach. For obvious reasons, he's the one and only Classic pirate in OP.

The rest basically depends on what you truly think a pirate should be like. For me, Shanks is more of a pirate than Kaido and Big mom.
Kaido is more of a gang leader than a real pirate and Big mom hasn't been on the seas for god knows how long, continuing to build her empire through political connections.

Blackbeard > Shanks >> Big mom and Kaido

If you had to compare them to real life figures then:
- Blackbeard is for sure the most pirate-like (he always appears in the most piratesque islands, like Jaya and Beehive)
- Kaido resembles much more a terrorist militia/para-military force rather than a pirate
- Big Mom is THE organized crime in OP world, Mafia-like, not really a pirate
- Shanks.. few infos about him, but looks like the most 'fictional'

My answer is Blackbeard

In my opinion:

1. Blackbeard: He is the definition of a true pirate. Ambitious, opportunistic, greedy and treacherous. Everything he does is for his own benefit. He even dresses like a real pirate. Not for nothing is he based on the most famous pirate in history.

2. Big Mom: Like Blackbeard, she will do anything to achieve her goals. As we have already seen, she is only allied with Kaido out of interest, and is prepared to betray him at any time.

3. Kaido: His ambition seems minor compared to the two previous ones. We know that he wants to turn Wano into the capital of piracy and declare war on the world. Even so, his erratic behavior leaves him in the third position.

4. Shanks: The Yonko who least looks like a pirate. His supposed goal of maintaining a balance in the world takes him away from the TOP3, since he is giving up his freedom, the most valued thing for a pirate.

Piracy is criminal activities in sea including robbery, murder and rape. It's obvious that the criteria to become a successful pirate in One Piece differs greatly from real life, otherwise someone with high moral standards who wasn't interested in treasures like Newgate wouldn't be referred to as a "great pirate" by the omniscient narrator.

Imo the only notable piratish trait is how some dress, especially Roger, Newgate, Teach, Shanks, Linlin and Devon.







Mihawk looks and acts like a Spanish privateer. Kaido looks and acts like a drunk Viking warlord (technically they were old Norwegian sailors). There's really no realistic qualities to become a great pirate when the protagonist doesn't care about wealth. Oda will focus on freedom more than any other trait, reminds me of Marco when he said "do you think pop's voice is still binding us to his will?". Whatever is Luffy's definition of a Pirate King.

According to the Ace Novels, it was Big Mom first, then Whitebeard, and now Big Mom resumes with that title.

There's not much on Blackbeard other than taking over WB's territory's. Blackbeard also doesn't care about his underlings/allies shown by Pink beard.

Whitebeard takes care of everyone under him, maintaining strong ties with his allies. He opened up shops, real estate, and banned human/drug trading within his territory. Whitebeard after taking out other pirates with bounties has third party members that get the bounty cash for him from the WG.

The strongest is Kaido, and the most impregnable/savage is Shanks.
  • Kaido/Big Mom as seen plays with their food.
  • Shanks goes for kill or breaks an enemies will unlike Kaido.
    • Ex Shanks: taking off Eustass Kid's arm.
    • Ex Kaido: Throws them in prison with mediocre torture tactics
I'd say from portrayal Shanks runs something more like a Mafia and I would not be surprised if he has strong ties to the underworld and corrupt politicians/established officials.

So overall my opinion based on the info and my headcanon

Whitebeard > Big Mom > Teach > Kaido > Shanks
