I respect Dragon Ball but Luffy is a better character than Goku in literally every regard.

Goku>Luffy
Z team > Straw Hats

Oda is really bad at making me care about his protagonists because I've been reading One Piece since 2009 and yet I care more about Yamcha than basically every Straw Hat
You have to be trolling

Nostalgia glasses. I love Goku, but if we're gonna be critical of Luffy, Goku has the personality of a wet paper towel, and has zero meaningful interactions with anyone on his side. Luffy is more nuanced or atleast used to be. He was basically an improvement over the Goku model, can't say the same about the current iteration of Goofy, but Goku was never all that to begin with.

One thing Goku has over Luffy is character development for sure, Luffy has none. I can see an argument from that angle, but he regressed in Super anyway.
Goku peaked at OG Dragon Ball, but he's basically a reckless dad moving forward. If anything, best Dragon Ball character would be Piccolo, Krillin, and Gohan.

If we're talking about pre-TS Luffy or pre-Super Goku, then Goku easily, but pre-Amazon Lily Luffy was still a great character and his character during Water 7 and struggle with Usopp is still amazing.

If we're talking about Super Goku or Post-TS Luffy, then neither, but if I have to pick one, then Luffy but just barely since both have dropped drastically in terms of character and story.

Goku literally abandoned his fights multiple times, if anything it's always Gohan who must clean up the mess.
Mmmm? Only time Goku "abandonned" a fight was with Cell and that was because Goku had faith in his son's strenght (and he ended up being right)

Another time he might have "abandonned" was against Fat Buu as it was implied he had a chance of beating him, but that was because his time on earth was limited and he wanted to teach the kids the fusion dance so they can also take care of future threats as it wasn't his role anymore as a dead man. (Which goes against the whole "Goku is a psycho who only cares a bout fighting strong opponents" narrative by the way)

Stop watching DBZA

Luffy literally able to read people's character and getting real with the situation
Luffy "reading people character" mostly boil down to him having full faith in his nakama and people that fed him, although there are some cool moments (mainly pre-ts where I had no issue with his character) like with Conis in Skypea.
But where was his character reading when CP9 betrayed Galley La and Pudding betrayed him and Sanji? Let’s be serious , most of the time "getting real" is Lufffy solving the situation by punching or promising to punch the bad guy… which is what any shonen MC does

also
>baited Piccolo into making himself even bigger so he could save Kami

>knew Trunks wouldn't kill him, which is one of the things that showed Goku was like the stories he heard

>read into Vegeta's mind

>first one to understand that Vegeta let himself get possessed by Babidi on purpose
>manipulated Buu into betraying Babidi

>sensed that Elder Kai was a pervert and used it as their advantage

where else Goku simply relied on Author new power up or simply get annihilated to get the job done.
Only reason why Luffy is alive is because of plot protecting his ass lmao. Like his mythical god zoan magically pumping his heart back.

Can Goku talk like Luffy to any of his new friends? Most of his friends are basically a reduced fighting boss.
Dragon Ball isn't a story where the MC goes around making friends every arc. And most of Luffy "friends" are more like his worshippers since Wano.
These panels have more soul than anything that ever came from TARDffy's mouth with his friends though. No need for big speeches

Also he didn't even defeat Frieza, Cell, nor even Zamasu.
He defeated Frieza, he simply didn't kill him. And Goku taking a backseat sometimes (like during his fight against Vegeta where he spent the second half on the ground while Krillin/Gohan/Yajirobe fought or in the androids arc) makes way him more tolerable as a MC than Luffy that has been hogging the spotlight non-stop for 1100 chapters except for MC self-inserter with power fantasy .

But foremost Goku's character has been consistent through and through, a battle-crazed naive mountain hick that happens to have a good moral compass even if he can make stupid decisions in the heat of the battle, Luffy showed battle lust against Kaido out of nowhere after 25 years of serialization and will yap about being the freest on the sea yet these last arcs showed his destiny was written from the moment the Nika fruit chose him. Making a huge aspect of his character a joke
Motherfucker was literally laughing his ass off while Vegapunk was bleeding out on the ground despite saying nobody should laugh at someone's death when Orochi killed Yasu

Super is a cash grab made twenty years after DB ended so idc about what happens there

You forgot the entire DBZ Saga when he got mauled by friendly fire, left Frieza with Krillin and Gohan, literally let go of Vegeta, and not to mention Buu. Just accept it that Goku is just a Deus ex machina for half of the show and he's not even having morals, he's just a brawler. If he has morals, why would he let Vegeta go after whatever he has done. I like Goku as a brawling character but he ain't having much going on in DBZ other than bleeding your ear to death. Still Piccolo a much better dad than Goku.
