it wasnt about giving up on his ambition, but putting something else above it. You can do that without abandoning your ambition, as we can see with zoro

What did he put above it? So when he got the message from Luffy was he supposed to aimlessly wander around until they reunite after 2 years?

I would say sanji was badass until wci, but he didn't do much in that arc.
His portrayal in wano so far is better but I expect more of him, and hope he will have a big fight with a strong opponent by the end of the arc. He needs one.
