Disclaimer: they are all badass On some level but some have it as More of a defining characteristic
whitebeard is a given
zoro’s whole character is badass samurai who drinks and gets lost
now the more interesting ones...
shanks is the ‘laid back badass.’ he just makes everything that should be a huge deal very casual, which is very cool. prime example is losing his arm to save luffy right in the 1st volume Or stopping the war. he is the wolf in sheep’s clothing
rayleigh is the prime ‘not so old badass’, think netero from hunter x hunter. pretends like he’s washed up but could take almost anyone to the cleaners. when he reveals his true strength he’s surprised he’s still so effective meanwhile everyone else is terrified. Prime example swimming through the calm belt with the sea kings or clashing with an admiral.
Fujitora is the ‘disabled strong-willed badass.’ You underestimate him because he can’t see and it turns out he is more fearsome because he can’t see! For example from another series, Toph from Avatar the last airbender. He’s a force to be reckoned with even if you can’t get a read on him because you’re thrown by his blindness. Prime example is when he reveals he blinded himself.
roger is another classic example, but I see him as the quintessential ‘d who doesn’t fear death badass’. We know none of the Ds were scared and died with a smile on their face, but roger didn’t only not fear death, he also used his unavoidable death to bring about renewed life for pirates everywhere. And that was only after he accomplished all his dreams. He could’ve just died From his illness but he left one last gift to the world and allows himself to be executed by the world government as a huge middle finger to oppression everywhere and death itself. Prime example is his speech on the execution block.
aokiji is the ‘mysterious badass.’ You don’t know what the hell he is thinking. Just like The walls of ice created by his ice fruit his Actions are unknowable and Inscrutable. He’s cool because he does what he wants and he doesn’t explain anything. Prime example would be long ring long land decision to let straw hats live.
I’ll also give a shout out to Law. He’s like akoiji to some extent because he’s a little mysterious. But I would argue him as growing into the ‘strategic badass.’ Look at the man’s fruit—It’s super strong but it also requires true strategy and tactics to fully utilize, plus he’s a surgeon. Now Luffy ruins many of his plans... nonetheless, the man does not flinch. The reason? In true D fashion, He’s just as good making up plans on the fly As he is creating best laid plans. He’s a bit of a Shikamaru-type. Prime examples would be Rocky Port incident and his Off the cuff decision to Ally with Luffy on Green Bit to stall Doflamingo.
mihawk to me is not very badass, rather he’s straight terrifying. Which I could see people seeing as badass and I’m cool with that.
Kaidou’s introduction was badass but so far he’s more of a rational brute than a badass.
Some may think another obvious suspect would be Oden, but to me he is not badass because he was a bit of a fool. It was again the buildup to his name reveal that was a cool story point, but as a character Oden is more loyal and inspiring than strictly badass. Contrast with Zoro who is loyal and also truly Inspiring because he is badass.
Luffy, Sanji, garp, even Katakuri all have good arguments. I do think they have more badass moments than actually embodying badass, But they definitely are good picks. crocodile is like a smooth charming badass, I’d argue.
doflamingo is more sadistic than purely badass.
unfortunately (?) Ace while having a badass fruit, design, and even some badass moments... he ended up being more tragic than anything else.
akainu... I would characterize him as absolute authority. That can be badass but as the key villain on the WG side He is more an obstacle than anything.
Blackbeard is actually the anti-luffy and a coward with little honor as far as his maneuvers show which disqualifies him as badass for me.
