As an author who as created on of the best selling piece of fiction and it having a good or bad ending won’t really change much.
Knowing the ending of the comic would have a mixed reaction regardless , how would you prefer to end your comic?
1. An ending that would satisfy a majority of your audience
2. An ending you want and would satisfy you regardless of your audience expectation.

This is your last piece of art and you don’t plan on interacting with the audience after you are done.

An ending you yourself would like and be proud of. Even if it has an audience, it’s still your own art and you need to do it your way. Even if people hate it.

Look at wano. Downright the most unsatisfying saga of all time, but if that’s what oda wants to do then whatever. I’ll complain but I’d rather oda write what he likes than pander to his audience. (The pandering is what makes some manga unreadable)

The ending that will correspond to the morality and message of the work and draw the final line, or turn everything upside down (aka reveal important detail). Doing an ending just to shock-value/subvert expectations/satisfy majority/vilely deconstruct - is pop-culture garbage tier for mitwits/normies, self-respecting author should not descend to their level. IMHO.

Oda will do #2
Since he's become the most famous shonen author of the generation he can essentially do whatever he wants, the editors have no authority at this point.
But he will keep interacting with the audience or rather Shueisha will. Oda never talks to us except for the sbs.
Do you really think Shueisha is not going to milk the living crap out of the franchise after the manga ends?

If I were an author I'd write what I like but I'd complete the story first and either publish it in one go or if it's a magazine format I'd publish the finished story in weekly / monthly chapters.
(that's not how manga publishing works normally)

I wouldn't do shit like rewriting entire plotlines to revive dead characters because readers are complaining on twitter and posting death threats because they are pissed.
That's ridiculous and those kind of 'fans' need a mental health check.

Do it my way of course. But it is also true Oda is writing a shounen so if he tries any fun move they will simply stop the chapter.

That said this recalled to my memory a manga of some years ago. It was about a prehistoric boy taking revenge on a monstrous mammoth who killed his family, it was not bad, it resembled Baki or Toriko in a way. At a certain point that manga got axed and the author knew he had to finish his story in just some chapters (some dozens at best), he didn't give a damn and well that story and what happened is something to behold lol

End the story as it should be, sometimes the fandom wants stupid things, should end according the manga itself and how according the plot

I like to read a good story, so if i make a story i'd like that story's plot, storytelling and conclusion to satisfy myself.

Yourself ofc.

If the author had to always consider what the audience will think, he would never be able to make progress with the story.

That depends.

Oda changed the history so many times because editors told him that fans would like better other way.

It is very selfish from him stop doing it now that he is rich. Even because he got rich after changing his own history in favor of fans.

Besides that I'm doing the story to myself but if I ever take a change for the fans I would keep doing it till the end.
