Questions & Mysteries Why are some people so hesitant to criticize One Piece?

#1
It’s really bizarre how a large chunk of the fanbase refuses to ever criticize any of Oda’s writing decisions and is extremely toxic to anyone who ever voices any criticism. I’ve never seen this before in any other fanbase, at least nowhere near this extent. Naruto fans had no problem with heavily criticizing the War Arc (which was objectively way better written than Wano btw). AoT fans had no problem with criticizing the ending (I think it’s overhated if anything). OPM fans have no problem with criticizing the constant redraws and slow release schedule. But if some random dude on Twitter so much as dares to imply that the Shakky gooner slop isn’t good writing, a horde of angry Oda angels will swarm him and lob nasty insults at him for not thinking the Shakky shit is peak fiction because something something Helen of Troy

My theory is that those people are not « fans of One Piece » but their are fans of « being fans of the best manga ever ». They are fans of what it it says about them.
So if you dare to say that One Piece is not perfect you are basically saying that they are shit and it is unbearable to them. Thus the massive backlash to any criticism.

Not to get too political, but I think a large part of it is that, frankly, a sizeable chunk of One Piece’s adult male audience are emotionally unstable soyboys/manchildren who heavily overlap with hyper online progressives who will call you a Nazi if you don’t agree with all of their opinions. I’ve noticed that a lot of the more masculine-coded series like JJK have fanbases who don’t give a shit if you criticize Gege’s writing

What planet do you live on cause I’d love to go there

One Piece has one of the biggest folk” subreddits only lagging behind AoT and JJK

80% of WorstGen (the biggest One Piece forum on the internet) openly critiques One Piece and a large chunk of them are very vocal about completely losing interest in the series

One Piece fans on Twitter also openly complain about Oda turning God Valley into the Goon Valley Olympics

Some people are hesitant to critique One Piece for the same reason anyone is hesitant to critique a series. They enjoy it and look past some of its flaws

If you go to Twitter or the JJK subreddit and make a post critiquing Gege some people will agree and others will disagree

It’s like that for almost any fandom on the internet

People only unify to critique something if they genuinely think it’s horrible and I can only really think of 2 times where that has ever occurred. AOT’s ending and Gojo’s death

Regardless of how you may feel One Piece has never really had something that “bad” that’s also of that magnitude

Like everyone can agree Kinemon’s death is ass but no one discusses it because it’s forgettable. On the other hand we’ve definitely had things that split the fandom

For example, G5 is one of the most divisive transformations in shonen history

One Piece is the highest selling manga of all time, so naturally its folk subreddit would have a pretty high population even if a smaller percentage of the overall fanbase was subbed to it.

Because jjk fans seem to know it's straight pigslop
And some people are fine with something they like being garbage or at least garbage in comparison to other things of that medium
One Piece however was pretty great a while ago and a lot of fans can't believe it fell off so hard compared to the days where we got great arcs like Alabasta - Skypiea - Enies Lobby - Thriller Bark back to back
So they live in delusion and block out all criticism for it so they can pretend it's still at it's peak
You obviously can't do that with a series that was always dogshit though.

I’m not saying One Piece faces the same level of criticism as series like JJK or AoT

But that’s mainly because (as much as some of yall may disagree) One Piece hasn’t had its “jumped off a cliff” moment yet

There’s almost always a definitive moment/moments that tell the reader “wow this is ass now” which changes their perspective on the series and makes them a bit less forgiving of the authors mistakes

For some people that was G5/Nika

Hence why Oda can do the same bullshit he did constantly throughout the pre timeskip but now it bothers people

Just imagine how people would react if Enies Lobby dropped today and nearly every Strawhat won their fights with powerups that have 0 setup (Ashura and DJ still aren’t explained to this day)

With JJK it was Gojo’s death, with AOT it was the ending, even Sakamoto Days had something similar recently with a certain someone dying in a very silly way on top of the “Tunnel Effect” thing

This isn’t to say that some series don’t experience a downward spiral before the nail is put in the coffin (people falling off of AOT in the final arc, JJK’s respect starting to fade after the Zenin Massacre, OP during/after Wano, etc) but generally there’s a final straw that breaks the camels back

One Piece hasn’t had that

There’s plenty to criticize about the Shinjuku Showdown, but it’s still hundreds of times better than straight up garbage like Wano. Despite that, there’s plenty of OP fans that will throw a temper tantrum if anyone calls Wano trash

This just proves my point. Gojo’s death was way better handled than all of Wano, yet JJK faces far harsher criticism for that than One Piece faces for Wano being garbage

Piratefolk is huge and try to find a big One Piece youtuber who livestreams often that doesn't hate on One Piece

I'd say is all on influencers. If you are an One Piece only content creator as many began as and you keep criticizing One Piece chances are that fans will dislike criticism and will not follow you. Your own fanbase will stop reading/watching One Piece and also stop following you.

So you only see those said content creators criticizing One Piece when the critique is generally accepted by community or in their secret second channel, usually a channel for lives.

And by the way, to contribute to the positivity that I think is really needed, my opinion is that Wano is Peak

You say this

Meanwhile, King of Lightning recently was trashing One Piece about if Moria would be able to read poneglyphs that would suck, that the three eyed tribe was weird, etc

Jay D Legend complains on livestreams about people hating on him for him not liking the story

Morj complains about fans thinking the story is peak and says the high point of the story was 15 years ago

With Jay D Legend it's ok because I really like him but I usually have to skip through the complaining if I am listening to someone else

Who are these overly positive One Piece creators?

You’re not listening to what I’m saying

I’m not here to argue whether Gojo’s death did or didn’t make sense. I didn’t have a problem with it really at all but that’s besides the point

From the perspective of the fans it was handled horribly and permanently tainted the series. Meanwhile a lot of people like Wano

I don’t fully understand how or why people like it so much but they do. It is what it is

You have to look at how most fans view things vs how you do. I think Solo Leveling is one of the worst things I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching but everyone else likes it and thinks it’s masterfully written

That’s just how things are

Gojo’s death also was taken very poorly by the community mainly because he just has so many fans. Like Gojo is easily the most beloved anime character since Itachi or something

So when people found out that he died they didn’t really care about how or why

JJK’s sequel is set decades into the future and people are still hoping Gege finds a way to bring him back lol

Bit of a stretch tbh

It's something they grew up with and are more sensitive about.
JJK is much shorter than OP. People that put the hours in to read 1000+ chapters are way too invested at this point.

OP fans seem to have superiority complex as well since OP was better written than it's rivals. Bleach going into shit and Naruto becoming garbage towards the end made OP tards too happy to claim they picked the right series and they have better taste so they don't want to give that away.

A lot actually like this too.
I don't get why for the life of me but any irl friedns i have that watch the show were jizzing their pants about Wano. "Did you see Kaido's transformation?" "G5 holy shit"
Pretty colors is enough for some people. They don't get the writing problems.
