Speculations Why are we seeing Kuma’s backstory?

#1
Oda doesn’t usually spend so much time on a backstory. The closest examples I can think of are Oden and Law.

However Law has basically been a pseudo-SH, whereas for Oden, his backstory included the Roger flashback as well as the story of how Kaido came to power.

But what is important about Kuma’s backstory? It had some of god valley in it, but Oda skipped over so much of it that it’s debatable if we even needed to see it.

My guess is that we are getting this because of Bonney. I think Bonney is the next momonosuke type character, with the SHs likely carrying her along with them until they meet Shanks, who is imo her brother. She will definitely be part of elbaf, but I could honestly see Bonney tagging along till lodestar.

Exactly.

Sadly, some people want only to see fights.
Normal people want to see lore expanded, character having motivation and plot.
Im one of those who like it more. But Oda should really start answering some questions now and not bring even more lore. i remember Oda said he doesnt like drowing fight anymore and want more story. I guess thats why the fight against Kizaru was short and sweet

Back in Skypiea, Noland’s was six and a half chapters long at a time when every chapter had more pages. That was for two characters who had died centuries ago and whose role in the plot is almost entirely self-contained to one arc.

Kuma’s is four and a half so far, and one of those four was only 13 pages long.

It’s not been an especially long flashback, it’s clearly important to the current arc and Kuma‘s been a mysterious and influential figure in the series since TB. There’s nothing really weird about the length of Kuma’s flashback or why we are getting it.

Lmao bluds been violating certain fandom here. :kobeha:

Why are we getting a flashback of him? Well, its because his race has connections to Nika, isn't it? They knew it earlier, they dance to the drums of Liberation. Kuma has helped SHPs in the past. The reason was unknown, he was with the RA, he is far more important to the story.

Oden's flashback is 14 chapters long, it's roughly triple what Kuma's flashback in terms of chapters and quadruple in terms of pages is right now.

Law's is sitting at 8 chapters

It was mentioned earlier than Noland's is 6 and a half.

Otohime's is 7 chapters long.

Kuma's flashback isn't long. It'll be tying in length with Chopper's chapter count next chapter. The gaps might make you think it's longer than it is, but if you look at it (page wise) it's only at just 63 pages. That's only a bit longer than Nami's.

It'd need 4 extra chapters to catch up to Franky's in terms of length.

To explain a few major things:
1. Kumas character and history is one of the biggest nexus points in the story due to the pacifistas. So the backstory is explaining why a pacifist would choose to be a weapon and why a revolutionary would choose to be a weapon of the World Government
2. It explains kumas sacrifical nature which likely is going to come back during the climax of the arc

I don’t think watering this flashabck down to Bonney is fair to kuma. This has been about him and his life bonneys barely been part of it

I really like the backstory, so no complaints

but I do wonder why Oda is giving him so much focus. Because it honestly looks like Kuma is about to die soon.
Just oda things. He doesn't care at this point , he knows brain dead fandom will buy anything he gives at this point.
Flashback has been on downfall since post time skip.
I don't even enjoy them.
