Just for quick comedy and nothing else. It didn't move the plot along nor lead to any character development despite it being the perfect opportunity to do so.

This is the reason I say that the hype of characters doesn't mean anything. Oda changes everything according to the situation. He always find excuses and gets away with it.

I also have thought of that when he fought Fuji and Doffy. When the explanation on his DF being restricted by Haki wasn't explained yet.

It was never stated or showed what would happen to the users linked to the dolls if they are simply removed from Hawkins's body. In the last chapter Killer simply gambled and he won. But Oda could have make the dolls still working even if they were removed for example and turn that tactic useless.

So it's not like that Law was at that point where he needed to take a risk and finally he resolved in his own way.
