Shanks is a time traveler theory... :crazwhat:
He thought they were dead because he didn't know they were fighting on Little Garden for 100 years.
They thought Shanks was dead because they met him before they started fighting and assumed he didnt live long enough to be alive in present.
But lady Toki sent him into the future after Dorry and Brogy started their fight.

I’m thinking maybe it’s not actually talking about Shanks? He doesn’t say catch up with old friends, but when old friends. Of course, that’s nitpicking a translation, which isn’t always a good idea.

Say, Shanks is already on Elbaf.
Then Dorry and Broggy show up, and all the locals of Elbaf thought they were dead because they’ve been gone for a hundred years.
Big party to celebrate, Shanks stays because he likes parties and he likes to see “when old friends who thought each other dead are reunited.” Meaning the people of Warland and Dorry/Broggy.

Because wano was a collection of xenophobic losers and giants were intellenge book readers that travelled the world
its really funny that oda's take on japan was like "its a beautiful place but everyone here is retarded and racist and life sucks"

this is very likely :sus: oda's dialogue is apparently pretty loose and casual even in the original so sometimes the translators have a real hard time with what people mean with implication and context but this makes more sense than the other interpretations, to me
