General & Others Why did the Gorosei want to murder York one day ago, did they not need Mother Flame yesterday?

Oda had them change their minds for the readers.

If, the Gorosei protected York from the get-go, CP0 would not get the order to kill all Vegapunks, which would lead us to figure out the mystery and know from the jump that it's York.

The mystery mini-arc was more important to Oda than the narrative consistency.

Also, the Gorosei are known to be incompetent, so this is in line with their character. Indecisiveness, incompetence, impatience, over-panicking, rash decisions, etc.. I just wonder how Oda was able to sell us that these Jokers were able to rule the World for 800 years

The way I see it they decided to eliminate all of the Vegapunks as soon as they found out they were researching the void century.

York being the informant didn't matter to them, she is also a Vegapunk and had to die.

Things changed after the Lulusia incident, where their test of Uranus and the usage of the motherflame powersource was a huge "success" (plus Imu desiring to use it again).

They were in a dilemma now, because on the one hand they still need to eliminate all of the Vegapunks, but on the other hand they would also lose access to the powersource they need.

So they confirmed if York was actually able to produce "motherflame" on her own and then decided that they could also let her stay alive. Even then I'm not even sure if they actually mean it or were just straight up lying to her, the one Gorosei nodding so suspiciously towards the others might hint at something.

The 6 days between Lulusia's destruction and the actual phonecall is a bit iffy of course, but it is a shonen manga after all.

In his eyes Oda needed to write it that way (change of mind during the phonecall in present time), because otherwise it would've been difficult to pull off the murder-mystery-plot.

You're mistaking character stupidity with Oda not knowing how to plan. Oda is a lazy writer, it is clear as day that he improvises every chapter which is why there are so many random subplots occurring.
100%
It isn't on villains, it's on Loda

Dude is almost getting to Mashima territory with this shit if improvisation and retcons every few chapters

Okay, you guys actually cant read.

Chapter 1078:

York wants to be a CD and is confident that she can do it.

1079:

York literally alludes to not damaging the Mother Flame lab here and that she will be eliminated too, yet the chapter before she was seen smiling and confident. This is because of the lab.

Remember that 3 months prior, York leaked that Stella was researching the Poneglyphs. They decided to kill him then, but didnt send Kizaru until recently (we dont have a timetable).

There is nothing, until last chapter (i.e. "today") that puts York in contact with the Gorosei to change their minds.

Tldr: York was already confident that she could capture VP and Strawhats and bargain her way to CD status with the mother flame factory.

Saying Oda is a shit planner when this literally happens months before it is explained is a cop out.
