What build up? All he did against Big Mom was:
- Attack a small fleet, causing a bit of money shortage
- Injured a commander and took something (presumably a rubbing of the road poneglyph)

This may or may not be true, but Kidd might be the son of Captain John. If this were true Kidds dad would have been former crew mates with Big Mom. What he stole from her territory might also be related to John. There might be more here between Kidd and Big Mom than we think.

It's definitely a Luffy's special power. He always makes people around him to either lose motivation or become dumper. In other words, make plot around him look stupid for his convenient. For example:

• Katakuri somehow throws away his trident, the very effective weapon against Luffy
• Kaido somehow acts opposite to what he spoke
• Kid somehow gives up on revenge and chase Big Mom instead
• Law somehow stop fighting Kaido following Luffy's order
