Questions & Mysteries Why does Oda always force a rivalry between Law and Kid Luffy?

#21
It’s how he’s always written them.

It’s also how he writes Zoro vs Sanji, broadly.

When it comes to the actual feats he gives all the good stuff to Luffy/Zoro. But throw in a few panels of them standing side by side, some comedy arguing and a bounty war and bam, all the fanboys are suddenly happy.

It’s not well written. If Oda wants us to view them as rivals he should at least commit to it and try and make them genuinely as impressive as Luffy.

In this particular case though it’s especially egregious as Luffy’s bounty makes no sense at all, even with the coverup. In this very chapter we see that Luffy is a Yonko and they aren’t.

So there is something that makes Luffy more impressive and threatening than them.

So them having the exact same bounty cannot make sense. Even if they were all equal in strength (lol) Luffy should still be higher due to all the things that make him a Yonko and not Kid and Law.

I’ll put it down to Gorosei interference but it’s poor writing. Bounties have never made all that much sense, but this and Robin’s bounties stand out as two of the worst decisions he’s made.

Luffy will get back above them though so it’s only a temporary annoyance.

Rivals =/= same level of strength, although being similar in strength would make the rivalry more interesting

But that's why Luffy, Kid and Law's rivalry is not interesting, as for Law it seems Oda doesn't even push it, knowing Law's characters, and he definitely was not viewed as it when they allied, but now that Kid is put into the mix it seems Law is forced into the shit too

WG tried to hide Luffy's nika form and him being from the D clan that's why they gave them similar bounties but Morgans ruined it that's Oda's excuse to try and force their "rivalry"
Strength wise they are not on his level unless some people think they were even stronger than pre G5 Luffy who split the sky and has 3 advanced haki and he finally manged to reach their level after getting G5 :gonope: they are not even stronger than CH1010 Luffy
The gorosei were scared of Luffy's awakening

If there were some rivalry then Oda should have given both of the captains at least one of the three advanced Haki.

Law has an OP Devilfruit but doesn’t even have CoC, let alone any form of advanced haki.

Kidd has CoC, but doesn’t an OP devilfruit and any form of Advanced Haki.

But Luffy.. man oh man.. the guy has the best Zoan Devilfruit and above that all three forms of advanced Haki. The guy is a monster. If both Kidd and Law and their whole crew were to attack Luffy. I don’t think they would survive.

This is one of bad writings of Oda. The man did dirty on Kidd and Law. I loved the introduction of both of them at Sabaody.

The better writing would have been like this:

We skip the whole WCI arc. Get to Wano after Zou. Combine both Sanji and Zoro background on Wano. Judge letting his son marry the daughter of Kaido in change for influence and power and so on…

In the mean time Law attacks WCI, beats Big Mom and actually takes her throne and becomes a emperor.

Kidd attacks Shanks. Kills him. Takes his position. And he also becomes a emperor.

That way we would have BB, Kidd, Law and Luffy as Yonko. The Worst Generation lives up to their name. And Luffy would have need to fight Kidd for revenge of Shanks and BB for the revenge of Ace. And if Oda would have add new version of CoO to Law and CoA to Kidd. That would put a enormous impact to the story. At the end we could have alliance of BB with Kidd, Luffy with Law and they would have clashed for the throne.

This would have saved the first impression of Kidd as Bloodthirsty maniac.

King and Queen are close in strength:kayneshrug:

A nerfed Law and Kidd defeated big mom :kayneshrug:

With this arc Oda's done a decent job portraying the rivalries

It's nonsensical for them to get the same bounty. There are simply not enough reasons.
Luffy took down a stronger opponent in a gauntlet-like one on one.
They beat Big Mom in a 2 v 1.
Also, Luffy is Nika.
Also, Luffy was already worth a billion more than them. How did they make up for that?

Luffy is a bigger threat because of his legendary devil fruit, the Nika Nika No Mi. So I don't get it.

And how Kid and Law were able to go from 470 million to 500 million to arrive at 3 billion. Luffy went from 400 to 500 and from 500 to 1.5 billion and from 1.5 billion to 3 billion Berrys Right there the sudden surge of Kid and Law is very strange yet I'm used to validating what Oda is doing but here

I have the impression that it's forced and therefore not pleasant to see.
@rerere
Never heard of that fruit

More importantly, why did someone like Law get hyped along kid and Luffy when he had a lower bounty than guys like Apoo,Hawkins and even Drake?

Cause there is a rivarly, that simple.

Oda went out of his way this time to make it clear to distracted readers once and for all: he could've given different individual bounties and Emperor status just to Luffy, instead he decoded to differentiate these 2 things:
- 3,000,000,000 bounty to each of the 3, cause they individually do rapresent the same threat/danger
- Emperor status to Luffy only cause of his crew and influence (Fishman Island, Dressrosa, Wano...)

I mean, couldn't be clearer than that at this point
There is a rivalry. Luffy has three road poneglyphs now. He’s beat a Yonko solo while Kidd and Law jumped a weaker Yonko. He has Joyboys devil fruit. He’s much stronger than them and is the closest pirate to One Piece. He will soon have 2 ancient weapons at his beck and call.

The bounties are only the same because the gorosei wants to mitigate the attention give to Luffy.

Because Kid and Law have fans...

Your argument is messed up. Is completely fine for Kid and Law bounty grow to 3bi since they defeated Big Mom in the eyes of WG and World. The wrong is Luffy bounty being 3bi after defeating Kaido.

Since bounties = strength, it only means that the trio are equally strong.

Kidd and Law, although tag teamed Big Mom, did not lose. Luffy lost several times against Kaido and even died at one point. So it balances out that their bounties are equal

Damn I never knew kidd was stronger than zoro

Oda really fucked up how would a yonko have the same bounty as two non yonko
Post automatically merged:

Instead of given kidd an undeserved bounty why not actually make him deserve it instead you made luffy’s lackey more impressive than him

I wouldn't mind the same amount of increase
but giving Luffy only 1.5 billion increase but Kid and Law 2.5 billion? Fucking retarded
Luffy being yonko would make sense if his bounty was higher, but the same bounty? Why is he the yonko then?

Everyone got underwhelmed by these bounties. Oda flopped so bad. This is the first time no one cares about the bounties.
