He is not just badass, he is that powerful. There's no overboard here.

mihawk is a character who's supposed to be defeated in a 1v1 battle.
kaido and big mom need at least 5 supernoves to fight against,
there's no way even eos zoro can single-handedly defeat kaido or big mom. those top tiers can't defeat each other in a 1v1.
mihawk is simply not built for that type of greatness. it's just the way it is.

Well there are substantial reasons to believe that Mihawk wasn't more likely in the wrong when he spoke to Shanks in such a manner of superiority.

Something tells me that, actually, he wasn't confident enough to deal with Mihawk's long slash as he was with his other opponents 🤔

That's why he was nerviously smiling, hoping for someone to save him from embarrassment.
But hopefully for him Jozu understood him right away and stepped in immediately to relieve his captain's fear of Mihawk.
