Character Discussion Why Hiyori should have been a fighter and why Oda wasted her character

Agreed. Doesn’t make sense for Denjiro to not train Hiyori to defend herself either. She should’ve been competent and comparable to the Middling Scabbards.

Only scene this might impact is Zoro saving her? Which doesn’t need a big rework—Hiyori is without any weapon and trying to defend the SMILE girl. Have her block a few of Kamazou’s slashes bare handed before Zoro steps in over some Bushido honor of not facing unarmed opponents / children.

And if u become soo triggered by someone being a Oiran, that is a very traditional part of japanese culture, i recomend u to open more your mind and have more respect for the sex workers, they are people and this mindset of seen them as less worthy is just u showing your bias.
I wouldn't care if She's a Prostitute if Oda was upfront about it instead of pretending she is a "Pure waifu"

Oda Should have been erase yamato then make hiyori strong female samurai....how hard is that?

Yamato character is the worst
Her existance in a raid feels forced
Also her obsession with oden seems like lazy writing

Imagine hiyori being trained by denjiro
Oden itself was a monster, the kids shouldve been a monster too, even toki is a sword fighter
With kozuki bloodline and nitoryuu hiyori will be a much better character than trashmato...
So Hiyori becomes the strong successor of Oden, maybe even finds her dad's journal and meets Ace. Then... stays on the island at the end of the arc.

*Shrug*

Either this story has too many characters or enough. I wouldn't argue that it needs more.

Oda loves to draw Big Man coming to rescue the Princess scenarios.
That's what excites 15 yrs olds, I guess.
Oda admitted that his public was growing, but eventually he realized that a great portion of his fandom was in the 15-25 range. I really hope that Oda didn't care too much about providing the most desirable product and modeled his story mostly based off his own preferences. But money calls.

At least should have trained her so that she can defend herself against potential customers who are trying to rape her.
We don't know that she wasn't really. Look at that clientele... in a land where training is outlawed and the samurai have been obliterated. She could probably slap up some horny old drunk dumb enough to mess with an oiran known for her connection to the Yakuza boss.

She was helpless against Killer like anyone in that country would be, Oniwabanshu or otherwise.

I originally wanted to answer to Ha00's post in another thread but since my post got so long and turned into a rant I decided to make it its own thread.

The real question is: Why is Hiyori not a fighter??

She could have easily had a plot where one of the scabbards trains her so that she can support the scabbards&Momo in the future as a fully grown badass female warrior.

And Wano being a "traditional/ conservative" country is a non - argument. There are lots of old period dramas and even older storys about female warriors that are raised as warriors to enact vengeance, this would have been a plot perfect for Hiyori. Just think of stories like Lady Snowblood.

Instead we get a feeble princess who can 't do much more than act as a support character and the typical "woman in the background".

The time she won by not travelling to the future she did not even spend with her guardian Kawamatsu but as a prostitute.

She ran away, only to be spotted by a prostitute who decides to pick her up . Like, ANY other person could have found Hiyori. But no, it has to be a person who would not think twice about turning a small girl into a prostitute apprentice with, once grown up,
the goal of becoming a prostitute herself.
It doesn't make it any better that Hiyori probably never had sex with customers because Kyoshiro "shielded" her and created this myth of her being unachievable.

Hiyori even being SEEN as a prostitute by the audience suggests her sexual availability. She was reduced to her beauty, her body and the sexual desires men have towards her.
This is very well illustrated by the discussions in this very forum that were all about " Hiyori is amoral and dirty because she chose the eAsY way of making money with her body", "she would be worthless as a girlfriend because she's used goods" "Hoeyori" etc.
Then other people came and "defended" her by saying "She never actually had Sex with them" .
Again, it was only about her sexuality.

Oda writes nearly any of his female characters in sexually suggestive scenes.

He says he writes for 15yo boys. But the problem is that he writes for 15 yo boys from the 80s. Since Oda uses his own 15yo self the writing of One Piece does not evolve.
The expectations Oda's target audience today have, also regarding portrayal of female characters, has changed.

This can be seen in the actual reader demographics: 15yo boys don't read One Piece anymore.
It's mostly adults. A good portion of them female.
Oda is writing for a fictional target audience that does not exist anymore.

I don't think Hiyori needed to be a fighter to be a compelling character. I think Oda could've done better with just what he had. But I understand the sentiments in wanting her to be a fighter. One Piece is predominantly resolved through action, and for Hiyori to be more involved, being a fighter helps.

Hiyori's problem is that she lacks agency in the plot.

As a child of Oden, she is overshadowed by Momo. Every plan or scheme she enacted are a result of instructions from Kyoshiro, who brought her up. The moment she acted out in defense of Toko, Kyoshiro had to step in to save her. Her relationship with Kawamatsu exists to develop him, and her interactions with the Straw Hats are only there to inform them of the situation on Wano.

Her most important contribution was exchanging Enma for Shusui. She had to give up her birthright in order to forward the storyline of a male character.

This is all based on her role on Wano thus far. She still has a chance to make up for it and give her something more. It's hinted as much in her hatred for Orochi. (I have issues with that, but that'll be for another day.)

The only demographic and audience that WSJ cares for is the Japanese. Mangaka's do not write for the rest of the World. Oda already has addressed this in an interview. He doesn't change his writing because he knows that as people get older he's going to lose a lot of fans, but the payoff is that he will make newer fans out of the younger readers.

Honestly, it's inevitable because not everyone is going to continue to read manga and watch anime when they get older. Some lose interest, while others are too busy focused with life and being an adult.

This has been working for One Piece for 23+ as made apparent by the fact that each volume still sells millions of copies in Japan alone. Other big series that have come and gone never reached those numbers, even when factoring international sales into the mix.

Sure, some of us readers who have stuck around for the long haul might like to see things switched up a bit, but why fix something that isn't broke?

The only thing that annoys me more than Oda's bad way of writing females is the fandom endless thirst for a strong female

Just live with it, Oda likes to have women as cheerleaders for strong boys, it's never about sexism, but more about a "Man's fantasy"
Where anything badass a man does will get cheered and have blushes from females with fainting all over...

That's all there is to it...

For example Oda loves to have Zoro or Luffy save the day and for the women around to get horny by their actions, than to draw a strong females just to please the audience who are activist for such roles

It's simply who Oda is... in simplest of terms

But this "man's fantasy" you speak of is precisely a matter of "sexism".

Yes. It would 100% be MUCH better if Hyori was a warrior.
Just like someone else.

That was put in situations like this.

And most definitely DIDNT NEED SAVING from the "hero".

Trust me.
Hyori being a warrior or not wouldn't make the difference you think it would.
:kayneshrug:
You got a point.
I know Oda won't change his way of writing women and that he keeps putting them in sexually suggestive scenes. But it's just so sad.

It’s not
we all have freedom for our fantasy world

females too have right to dream of pretty boys in a fantasy dream they have, and with men who cook and spoil them like princesses

you don’t hear us guys saying women are objectifying us and they are sexist for those world of dreams.
They are just fantasy world in our mind or in those series

sexism is only when it’s done in real life and by taking AWAY choices for the other sex to choose their path

Oda seems to think that a 'wild ' girl is supposed to 'mature' into an elegant woman.
Just look at Aisa and Laki.
More than Oda thats Japan. And it isnt necessarily bad,Hiyori is still a badass in my opinion she doesnt need to be a fighter to be a strong woman.
