General & Others Why is Gen Alpha so Obsessed with JJK?

I enjoyed DS far more.
While I have JJK around average(6/10), I place DS above it.

- Story is better
- villians are better(except Muzan)
- world building is better
- characters are better
- fights are better(except Gojo vs Sukuna who clears every battle in DS, but one fight can't carry the entire franchise).

I can understand the hype for DS, it is really a good manga. JJK is also not bad, but it is a average good manga, not more not less.

In the end both are not on the same lvl as the big 3...

To each their own

Nothing will change lol unless some new manga comes to change things up. DS babyshakes other manga hard in sales per volume.
once again it comes from anime adaptation and the peak of anime fandom during covids quarantine.....

yawn.
what i think the majority of you lack is common sense and that manga/anime is more popular than ever so records will just continue to break as the yers progress, additionally DS was released during quarantine
Demon Slayer manga sales exploded after its 2019 anime adaptation, selling an estimated 82 million copies in 2020 and contributing to a total of over 220 million copies worldwide as of July 2025. After the anime aired, its yearly sales jumped to over 12 million copies in 2019 and peaked at around 82 million in 2020, making it the top-selling manga that year, according to Oricon's annual manga sales rankings.
By Year (approximate, with context)

  • Pre-Anime (before 2019):Sales were low, with 3.1 million copies sold across 14 volumes before the anime aired.
  • 2019:Sales exceeded 12 million copies after the anime's release, a significant increase from previous years.
  • 2020:Sales reached an estimated 82 million copies, the highest in any single year for any manga at that point, with over half of its total circulation occurring that year.
  • 2021:Continued strong sales, with around 30 million copies sold, even as the manga's completion approached.
Overall and Historical Context
  • The manga series concluded its run with 23 volumes, but its popularity continued to surge, reaching over 220 million copies sold as of July 2025.
  • Its rapid sales ascent in a short period, coupled with a high average of roughly 6.52 million copies sold per volume, made it one of the best-selling manga series in history.
  • The dramatic increase in sales following the anime adaptation is a testament to the series' immense cultural impact.

What's funny to me is JJK's biggest flaw is One Piece's biggest strength and vice versa. Imagine if we got a balance of One Piece's world building and build up, with JJK's focus on fights. That would be the perfect manga.

Oh wait that already exists, it's called HxH. That explains why it's always on hiatus.

Because it's simplistic and to the point, with a stellar anime visually speaking. Even super basic mangas like Demon Slayer gets mega popular for thr exact same reasons. OPM S1 and Attack on Titan S1 were the same as well.
Never mention Demon Slayer beside AOT and OPM ever again.

Yes because OP dwarfs any recent mangas in popularity.
It's one of the biggest mangas in history lmao
Ask someone who neger even watched or read anime/manga before and they'll name OP way before they name Demon Slayer, JJK or Chainsaw Man (no slander to CSM it's the best 2010s and up manga by far outside of maybe AoT but I never saw it)
This might actually be your most delusional take

No it’s called Yu Yu Hakusho

JJK is popular because it is overall a good story that focuses on interesting ideas and has compelling characters. Speaking of characters, having very charismatic characters such as Gojo, Sukuna, Toji, Todo, etc. helps a lot too. It has some of the best fights in manga period, not just from a combat perspective but also from a thematic standpoint. Also, during the vast majority of JJK's runtime, there was a constant feeling of tension that felt well earned, and it was clear that nobody was safe whatsoever. That alone makes it much easier to earnestly engage with a story. And of course obviously the anime which is one of the best adaptations ever strictly in terms of enhancing the source material.
