Speculations Why is Marco even here?

#1
Oda was planning to have this guy be a part of the arc since Zou.

Although he later hinted that Marco wouldn't be there from the start

Which led a lot of people to speculate that Marco would get there mid arc, appearing when the alliance was doing bad and in need of help.

Except that later Oda clearly changed his plans whatever they were and brought Marco into the raid early

Which led people to think that Marco would defeat King 'cause bird v bird, YC1 v YC1 etc.

It didn't work out.

Then since Zoro replaced him against King and Yamato was given the dog fruit people thought he'd to on the roof for the Momotaro stuff, but instead he's in the dome daydreaming about Red Line Gods.

Keep in mind that up until now he could be written out of the arc easily.

- Stalling BM --> Make BM talk with Pero for longer
- Curing the LF --> Make the poison spread slower so Chopper has enough time
- Stalling King --> Leave King in the background patrolling the sky like he was doing while Queen is kept busy by the live floor (Chopper, Drake, Hyogoro)

So why is he even here?

Does he ultimately go to the roof to save Luffy from another KO? Does he join the fight against BM?

Good question, the truthful answer is that Oda has no idea what the hell he is writing. Oda used three arcs as set up specifically for Wano and yet it’s so obvious Oda is creating each chapter out his ass. It’s not only Marco. Why is Big Mom here? Drake? Hawkins? Kidd and his crew? Izo? So many unnecessary characters that are here doing absolutely nothing. We now have Kidd, Law and Big Mom having the longest stare off contest.

Oda wanted this “war arc” to make “marine Ford look cute” so he added all this fan service characters and failed miserably.

Held off Big Mom, helped Chopper with the virus, sent Zoro to the roof, held off both King and Queen when Zoro and Sanji weren't here... Let's not pretend he was useless. He didn't defeat King nor Queen because it's not his role, he's not one of the main characters.
He wasn't useless, but as the opening post said, he could be easily written out and not much would change.

Anyone could be written out of virtually any arc, that doesn't mean much. Marco was there to even out the odds, for an otherwise one sided war.

Marco pretty much singlehandedly changed the flow of the entire war, without him, King and Queen are free to do as they please. The likes of Drake aren't doing shit. That's Kaidou's top 2 underlings who had their hands tied the entire time while he had to take on hoards of enemies. A massive nerf to his army by Marco's presence this arc.

Oda needed a legit reason for King and Queen to be out of the fight for this long, Marco was an easy answer.

His purpose so far is disguised as helping the Scabbards get revenge for Oden but what his true purpose is, remains to be seen...
He also served as a hype tool for King and as Zoro's wings pre-ch1000 but all of it could have been done without him.
Probably his healing ability will play a big role with the 1% man which should be his true purpose in the arc.

TBH, If Marco wasn't there nothing's really stopping King and Queen from beating the entire alliance on their own outside of the rooftop. If Chopper and company manages to stall Queen long enough, it will make Queen look bad at the end. And King, if left free, is probably going to the rooftop to worsen things for the alliance.

IMO Oda basically brought Marco into the fight to send Zoro to the rooftop. He was able to stall King and Queen long enough for Sanji to stop messing around and for R5 vs Yonkos to end - so that King vs Zoro and Queen vs Sanji can commence.

Because he’s really popular.

That’s basically it tbh, we might still get some Momotaro payoff later down the line, but he’s basically just here because he’s a hugely popular fan-favourite in Japan and Oda found a place to stick him in as a Whitebeard Pirate

plot purpose.
and the plot purpose being stalling calamities till oda can do new gen stuff with zoro in rooftop.
Pretty much this.

Oda really wanted to do that rooftop showdown 2v5 fresh. It wouldn't have worked without contriving the plot to absurd levels if Marco wasn't dropped in. That's one of the biggest events in the arc.
