yeah he gave kaido time to power up if not he could have quickly punched (the punch was fast) unsuspecting kaido and defeated him along with everyone on the island that is why kaido said "you can let go of me I won't run"

Future sight only works a short period of time in the future and that was a prolonged strength clash that Luffy was holding back until the island was clear.
Also Zoro himself said he missed, if Kaidou did dodge it was becasue of Enma's aura, not because the attack was too much for him to tank.
