Questions & Mysteries Why was Blackbeard sweating against Ray?

#14
Try to look at the situation from Blackbeard's perspective, not through the lens of brainrot powerscaling.

A guy who doesn't like taking risks nor cares about fighting fair, is suddenly confronted by one of the strongest individuals he's ever met in his life, and he doesn't have access to Oda's secret notes that reveal every character's current canon power level, so he has to go off that person's legendary reputation as well as first hand experience.

But yea, the sweating is obviously stupid writing because Rayleigh said Teach's powerlevel number is probably higher than his. I think KoL (Blackbeard's skinniest fan) should write a letter to Oda demanding a retcon of the sweating scene.

I think it could have been a few different things.

One, it was unexpected. Blackbeard is willing to take some risks, but he likes to know about them beforehand and prepare. Supposedly, he didn't expect Rayleigh to show up, so he probably never developed any countermeasures for dealing with him. Blackbeard has nothing to gain from fighting Rayleigh, so it probably wasn't worth the risk to him.

Two, Rayleigh doesn't have a Devil Fruit. One of Blackbeard's greatest powers is being able to nullify Devil Fruit powers, thus forcing the Users to fight without the powers they've come to depend on. Putting them at a disadvantage instantly. Rayleigh doesn't have that. That means Blackbeard doesn't have that advantage in this fight. Which again means, it's probably not worth facing him.

And Three, and probably most importantly...Rayleigh's actually SMART. This is actually a pretty rare attribute in the One Piece World. A lot of the characters in the manga are kind of meat-heads. But, Rayleigh actually analyzes and thinks through his battles like a pro. It's possible that Blackbeard doesn't want to let Rayleigh see how he fights, and find out some sort of secret about Blackbeard or his powers. Blackbeard keeps many secrets, especially about the particulars of his powers. And Rayleigh is one of the few characters who may actually be able to figure out what they are. Rayleigh might lose the fight, but he might be able to figure something out and get word to someone else. Putting Blackbeard at a HUGE disadvantage in the future. So, again, not worth risking it for Blackbeard.

He was already afraid of letting Hancock go due to the possibilities of losing his crew and his life if she turned him into stone. Then a top tier whos status was unknown this whole time shows up and already making threats with his Haki alone.

Ofc he would shit his pants in that situation. Because its not in his best interest to harm Hancock and knowing how OP Rayleigh "was" he could in an instant retaliate against BB and possibly greatly injure him. Then he will have to fight him alongside Koby and Ling's spawns + Marines etc etc.

And if he let Hancock go he would lose against them anyways. He was lucky tbh that Rayleigh gave him the option to leave.

Because Rayleigh is a power house and shown up out of no where. Only the most arrogant characters like kaido wouldn't show much reaction to him showing up ready to fight. Of course bb was scared in that situation doesn't mean he thought he was about to lose but that his problems just got a whole lot heavier. If Rayleigh decided to fight him not only would he have had a hard fight on his hands but he would have lost his crew and still would have had to worry about the marines. It's a situation where he could have lost everything so it's human nature to be scared in that moment
