-In WCI Big Mom was too powerful for Oda to deal with so he made her a mindless beast. Not neccesarily a bad thing, but the execution of it made her look awful. An endless succession of “Big Mom is about to kill everyone! Oh wait, nvm” so she looked awful and a joke by the end of it.
-in Wano Big Mom got shunted aside as a side villain compared to Kaido and she looked shit in comparison to him (plus continued gag moments) because she didn’t actually belong in the arc.
-Kaido someone managed to have a fight that was both far too long and rushed as fuck. So, yeah, he was really strong, no doubt about that, but the hints of an interesting personality were never really expanded on and in the end he was just not that great a villain.

So, ultimately, bad writing.

Why did Kaido want to commit suicide ?
Why did he want to become joyboy ?
What are Onis/ogres really ? What makes this race special ?
Who is Yamato's mother and what are the circumstances of her birth ?
No Rocks Flashback ?

But hey, at least Luffy got 10 different power ups fighting Kaido, so he served his purpose. Another masterpiece by GODA!

Oda fumbled with Big Mom and Kaido HARD.

Big Mom:
- had (and this is in my subjective af opinion) the most interesting back story so far. Was a victim of her own body, ađways hungry, her parents basically leave her to die, becomes a piece of merchendise for a child trafficker, kills a Giant with her bare child hands and ends up getting a DF through cannibalism. PLUS all the set up from way back with Lola to Fishmna Island.

- her crew actually seemed competent with some clever strategizing and actually setting a trap for Luffy at the end. As soon as the arc ends they become so mentally challenged that they can't enter into Wano on multiple tries and just let their captain and mother die.

- gets disrespected and used to hype up her oponents every single time she's on the page. Was shown using haki conscioussly only a handful of times.

Kaido:
- 3 page flashback. No info on why he's suicidal (which was shown and told only once btw). Is the Strongest yet we never heard of so e of his duels and fights other than with Oden. Has a child whose mother is completely unknown and not even mentioned. For some reason became fixated on Joyboy.

- Had a plethora of different attacks and techniques yet didn't show awakening. Nor did any of his crew, which prided itself on being virtually 100% zoans and a meritocracy where the strongest rule. None of the strongest had the peak of their respective powers.

- Was hyped as brutal and ruthless - the only kill to his name is a guy who got boiled for an hour in oil before getting shot in the head by Kaido.
Shot. In. The. Head.
So no kills in combat.
Same goes for his crew.

Sometimes I wish Oda would be my neighbor so I could punch logically writing into his pea sized brain, because he clearly lacks it.

Bad (or rather "not ideal") writing.

Oda built them up as those out-of-the-world monsters and when we finally got to see them in action, he resorted to a ton of PIS moments and plot conveniences to nerf them.

The by far most important problem was another one though: Nobody felt any kind of threat regarding BM or Kaido.

They were just some big, goofy punching bags and everyone and their mother knew Oda wouldn't make them kill or even severely hurt any (halfway) important hero.

I know this is a shonen and somehow Oda still thinks he writes this for kids, but just compare the thrill level while reading the Golden Age Arc in Berserk (yeah, a seinen, I know) or even the Chimera Ant Arc in HxH to the thrill level of the Raid on Onigashima or the WCI invasion.

Night and day. It's not even in the same universe in terms of thrill/suspense created by the author. OP has just zero stakes, which hurt it in those supposed "dramatic war moments", because nobody takes Oda's writing seriously. Rightfully so.

You guys just take things too seriously. Lol. BM needed TWO of the top 3 Supernovas to go beyond their limits to beat her and Kaido needed a 16 v 1 tag tornado tag match to beat him. If you actually look at it NO ONE in the series has taken what they have. Not even WB. You gotta put away your headcanon and look at what it is.

I will agree that seeing them go from immovable forces of Nature to “not hard to damage” was a quick turn but ducking hell, you guys act like they lost to Nami and Robin.
Basically, this. Kaido vs. Luffy was never a true 1 vs. 1. Did Luffy do the heavy lifting? Sure. Yet, it is also incredibly likely all those other attacks received had a weakening effect on Kaido. Especially all those internal wounds from the swordsman and Law. There's no way that's not interfering with his battle against Luffy somewhat.

Kaidou lived up to the title of "Strongest Creature" by functioning as more of an MMO raid boss, hence "Raid on Onigashima".
