He can very likely replace Kizaru, its completely an Oda thing to do something like this. He replaced Shichibukai as well in a whim.

Honestly with how Oda handled BM and Kaido, I feel death really is his only way out? Unless Oda has other plans for the character post Egghead, he really needs to start reducing the capacity of future threats otherwise we'll never finish the story lol.
