Character Discussion Worst handled character in One Piece ?

#22
Fuck it, I might as well vent. :PepeReport:

1. Usopp
He was my third favorite character prior to the timeskip. Water 7 and his development through Sogeking truly made him shine in my eyes. He was also inventive and a real problem solver. Now he's just a flanderized cowardly stereotype of what he used to be and his new plant abilities are boring and as useless as he's become. Also guy gets observation haki once and never uses it again in what was arguably one of the worst attacks he ever used to knock out a villain. Here we are now in Elbaf and so far this ain't looking to be his arc despite that this was a key part of achieving his dream, and makes me fear that LOda is just gonna have everyone achieve their dreams at the same time in the penultimate or final chapters.

2. Chopper
He went from being a small fry genius that was both adorable and intimidating when he wanted to be and regularly made good use of his doctoring skills, rarely ever being able to come across a medical problem he couldn't solve. His transformations were also fantastic, with Arm Point, Horn Point, Jump Point and Monster Point all showing his versatility and what an imposing monster he could be when he wanted to. Now he's just the cute toy mascot who sits in the background and acts as a permanent part of the 'weakling trio', never getting any proper fights that don't make use of that awful Kung Fu plushy point. LOda even had to offscreen his attempts to cure SMILE's affects or have Law and Vegapunk detox and cure the Punk Hazard kids despite that his dream is to cure everything.

Aside from them, every Straw Hat has gone through varying degrees of flanderization and just feel like background sets most of the time. Luffy's increasing range of abilities are also slowly making each of them useless, especially with how more and more bonus characters keep showing up to waste panel time and draw attention away from them, especially Jinbei. The same holds true for Vice Admirals, especially Smoker and Tashigi (Hina? There was never such a person).

Luffy's character has also hit rock bottom, but the rot was already sort of there since Amazon Lily made him even more one dimensional since he no longer had his crew around to bring out the best in his character, a trait which wasn't cemented until the timeskip happened since there were still solid emotional moments from him during Impel Down and Marineford, instead of this soulless condom with only one single emotion and no agency since he's just Joyboy's puppet.

Sometimes I think the only thing still keeping me attached to this series is Blackbeard and Koby and my desire to see if LOda can really pull off a good ending, but considering how he mishandled Vegapunk and Egghead (and Big Meme too), a character and arc that had been teased as far back as Thriller Bark and old SBS, I'm starting to doubt that a lot.

Smoothie, Compote and Brûlée's treatment while not reaching the abysmal level the way their mother has been handled has been incredibly baffling as well. Compote didn't get even a dialogue line or hint about her powers.

Apoo and Hawkins were handled terribly in Wano. They had great potential both in terms of personality and powers but were reduced to average minions for Kaido with their respective powers far from reaching what they should have been able of doing in battle.
As soon as the Supernovas were rewritten to support the various arcs' main conflict, they all lost their edge and uniqueness.
Scheming Law turned soft and lost his complexity. Mini Big Mom Bonney was brainwashed into this 5 year old. Bege forgot he was supposed to play kidnapping victim in a spaceship.

Probably Greenbull lmao
Imagine introducing the next big admiral in the story and hyping him up only to turn him into hypetool twerkbull in his official debut just so LOda can hype up Shanks for the millionth time but for a shitty movie tie-in. Then he finally confirms him to have a black blade only to also reveal that he's an overgrown leprechaun with bad fashion sense.

Surely the worst handled admiral, but compared to the worst handled Yonko he had it easy.

Big Meme will never recover from the humiliation and the allegations.
I am still wondering honestly how Oda managed to fail her and fuck up so abysmally with her when she had so much potential. It's exactly what you shouldn't, no, can't do with your female character and antagonist taken to the extreme.

It's Oda's shitty treatment of BM that made me fully give up on Oda to write and handle femal characters.

She had so much aura during that FMI phonecall, a half giant witch dripping acid saliva from her tongue while her freaky underlings stared worringly.

Then Oda had her do the Disney dance holding hands with her whimsical homies, and all aura was gone.

It's rather when she was said to have this nonsense sweet sickness that things started to look troublesome but she was still intimidating and looked very formidable for the arc until that shitty wedding cake bs started.

I had issues with One Piece since Marineford, but I just chose to ignore them or considered them too minor to spoil the story as a whole for me, but the lead up to the wedding cake and everything about it served as the first big red flag for me about where the series was headed.

LOda tries to portray Big Meme as menacing only to also make her a shortsighted idiot with mental problems, and when the closing act of the arc comes along, he reveals that she's slowly dying of hunger while in her stupid rage mode, so she's already defeating herself. Then they go and feed her a wedding cake which they were making a big deal about it being essential to the plot, so you would think it serves a purpose, but it doesn't, it just fixes her up and accomplishes nothing.

At the time, I was thinking either the cooks planned to make a cake so delicious that she suffers from takotsubo cardiomyopathy and dies from it, or that she loves it so much that she spares them for the time being, or that Bege realizes its stupid to let these idiots feed their enemy and goes ahead and poisons the cake anyway when they're not looking, or that she takes so long to stuff her face that it gives the Straw Hats enough time to escape or fight her commanders so Smoothie, Oven and Daifuku can get proper freaking fights, or at the very least that Big Mom is so stuffed she can't move. But no. While on the subject, what was even the point of bringing back Snack and Moscato at the end (and all those other siblings) if they weren't going to do anything?

But even all of that would've been an insult to Big Mom as a yonko. Its like LOda couldn't take her seriously just because she was an elderly wo-manchild despite all the directions he could've taken her in. Even the stomach acid thing from Fishman Island was just a dud.
