We have simply a completely different culture and we don't understand
I will never understand the "pride" of the samurai's culture
Part of this culture still persist in japan's culture even nowaday
Oden + Ray+ gaban + roger pirates... they would have washed the floor with kaido and his crew even without roger lol

Still can't wrap my head around how Oda, the guy who always portrays his protagonists as people who would put their friends above their own dreams if necessary, came up with this shit while writing a character the audience is supposed to root for...
The fact that he would lampshade it in a comedic manner through the Roger pirates makes it even worse. This backstory was terrible.

There's a hidden lesson in characters like Ace or Oden in opposition to the those like Ussop or Buggy.

BB or Orochi are examples of a coward character that achieved some goals with their wits rather than pure strength. Oden was strong since birth so he never had the need to lie to achieve anything. Being strong and influential made him avoid the ugliness of the world so when he experienced it first it was too late. That plus the pride of a strong sovereign ended up turning him soup.
