Cross Guild encounters the Straw Hats before they're landing in Laugh Tale and Mihawk puts himself as Zoro's last obstacle before becoming the right hand man of the Pirate King. Same feeling as Baratie but with Zoro having finally seen the world out there, hence ready to challenge Mihawk again, while also keeping it consistent with the new teacher-student dynamic for the two. Everybody watching this and Luffy not wanting to land on Laugh Tale unless Zoro wins because the World's Strongest Swordsman is the bare minimum for his Pirate King self (as Luffy himself stated).

The only relevant thing about Cross Guild as a threat is Mihawk since he hasn't been defeated yet (another serious versus against Buggy, Crocodile and company would be pointless), and Cross Guild as a threat only makes sense in the race for Pirate King, not after Luffy has become the king of all pirates. Mihawk being linked to Cross Guild, which can't exist as a threat beyond Luffy's reign over piracy (otherwise he wouldn't be reigning it), pretty much points to Zoro versus Mihawk happening before Luffy achieves the title.

And that's where people took interest in one piece.

Without Zoro , Mihawk , Shanks in the beginning this series was dead.

The series got its big jump during Alabasta arc, then got the biggest popularity jump from Enies Lobby to Marineford.

I doubt 2 chapters of Mihawk vs Zoro were gonna "save" the manga, despite Zoro's massive popularity.

While zoro vs mihawk will obviously be a highlight too many people ignore the rest of cross guild and even the strawhats. Both groups have way more to offer than just them and they won’t be doing nothing at all

I doubt 2 chapters of Mihawk vs Zoro were gonna "save" the manga, despite Zoro's massive popularity.

Alabasta to Enies lobby is one piece Peak.
But you need some initial boost too.
Without Zoro , Mihawk and Shanks.
Nobody wants to watch a Brain dead in sea wanting to become Pirate king.

But this is pointless. No reason to have Crocodile fighting and losing again, no reason to have Buggy fighting and losing again (especially since he has been recently depicted as the somehow "purer" inheriter of Roger's will compared to Shanks), no reason to have the rest of them posing a threat (they don't). Even the other forces they could be recruiting would feel pointless one way or another: Moria? Not a threat. Doflamingo? His only plot relevance belongs to beyond Laugh Tale. Weevil? A person portrayed in good light recently.

Nothing in Cross Guild feels like something deserving such treatment bar Mihawk.

Who becomes the next pirate king isn’t going to be decided by just zoro and mihawk with the strawhats and cross guild doing nothing

Except they don’t necessarily need to lose. In a Davy back fight scenario crocodile and even buggy can pull out a win. Yeah obviously as a whole cross guild isn’t winning but that doesn’t mean they won’t play a big role against the strawhats

Buggy has shown sympathy towards Luffy, who pretty much is what he wanted Shanks to be. Crocodile has shown sympathy towards Luffy, who is growing to become the Government's greatest enemy. Mihawk has shown sympathy towards Luffy, whose ambition was put by Zoro above his own.

Absolutely nothing sounds like "serious versus material" there.

But someone like Crocodile isn't playing a dumb game and the only member of the Guild yet to be defeated is Mihawk...

...which once again leads us to the scenario where Zoro vs Mihawk is the only versus coming from Cross Guild.

Cause they wont fight or play games between each other.

You have created a scenario in your head about some random davy back fights and thats not gonna happen.
They will find some ancient weapon/create Utopia and Buggy isnt going down till eos.
He will end up as PK or sit at the Empty Throne.

There’s no reason to establish them at the beginning of the final saga and assume they’ll be pointless
