Character Discussion Your thoughts on SWORD

What are your opinions on SWORD, the special operation unit of the Marines, that is led by X-Drake with Koby, Helmeppo, Grus, Hibari and Kujaku as its members?

What do you think of the way they have been written and used in the story? Did you have big expectations about them or not?

I admit that I had some big expectations when X-Drake was revealed to still be a Marine undercover and when the group's name was revealed, I was hoping that they would be a very important part of the Navy story, and would become the backbone of the anti-CD rebellion within the Navy, and that Vegapunk and Kuzan were associates with the organisation, and Smoker and Tashigi would become involved with them as well with a bigger role too, and that they would have a big role in Vegapunk's arc.

Of course reality was disappointing. While Hibari, Grus and Kujaku have interesting devil fruits, I was very disappointed with how X-Drake was handled and treated during Wano arc (just like for Apoo and Hawkins), they didn't have any association with Vegapunk nor played a role in Egghead (with the Blackbeard Pirates but not during what happened with Vegapunk and his island) or Kuzan, Tashigi was relegated as a background character without her having any power and character progression since how poorly she was treated in Punk Hazard, and I wasn't particularly impressed with how Koby became the hope of all the Navy with Blackbeard kidnapping him, and Garp mounting that whole rescue mission for him without giving real reasons to justify this (why Blackbeard had such an interest in Koby), etc...

I never really cared about them. To me they were just part of an organization Oda came up with last minute before an arc.

But I knew he wouldn't have time to properly develop the idea. He has too many characters and the story has been going on for a long ass time now.

Also they are marines, and Oda focuses more on pirates.

So I can't say I'm disappointed by how he treated them, I expected it and it even went beyond my expectations. To me they were just a bunch of desillusional fodders but it seems Oda wants to do something with Koby.

What a waste! Why did X Drake join Kaido?
SWORD made sense when they were a Marine intelligence and infiltration division that contrasted CP0, not whatever the hell Oda came up with recently.

It seems pretty obvious this "cool kids who fight Yonko and don't take orders club" wasn't the original plan since Drake and Koby used the same code system as Rosinante and Sengoku.

SWORD is a good enough concept, it's just that the final saga is so overstuffed that there's simply not enough room for Lolda to focus on them in any serious capacity.

Like, I am even fine with Grus, Kujaku, Hibari not having any notable fights or combat showings, what they represent and stand for far outweighs this kinda stuff. But they also happen to lack decent / memorable bits of characterization, Koby and Helmeppo being the two exceptions.

Honestly, the best case scenario is that they receive a really good cover story similar in quality to what the CP9 got. That would be the right opportunity to show off their personalities and quirks at least.

I'm not a fan. In universe, it makes older Marines look like punks. The Marines entire black ops division is a bunch of fucking new recruits that joined two years ago and X-Drake?

They don't do their job of attacking emperor crews outside of X-Drake infiltration of the beasts pirates until Garp gives them a safety net a the beehive.

I think they'll have a direct hand in bb defeat and while they're relatively weak right now compared to the big dogs I think they have insane potential

I think its a cool concept because we needed a group of Marines to look forward to their development, this is their supernova. So many vice admirals and a severe lack of talent, Sword gives us a glimpse of a promising next generation. I also think they will be used to combat Cp0 in the war.
