When it comes to Zoro's character, I've realized that he is somewhat the Gai of One Piece. Gai is arguably the strongest character in the original Naruto story.(Even though Itachi is also top 1)
Both Gai and Zoro were ordinary people who strived to become extraordinary. They both are endurance monsters. They both strived to be the strongest. They both have OP modes/forms.
These two are so strong in their respective verses, the author's deliberately handily remove them or restrict them from situations in which they would dominate.(Pain arc, War arc, WCI arc, Wano arc)
Gai was arguably the strongest in the original Naruto verse. His night Gai mode absolutely destroyed PEAK Madara, and he's achieved feats still not seen even in Boruto (Bending space with speed itself). He lost to Madara strictly because Kishi's plot restrictions on Gai were heavy. And I fear Oda may end up making the same mistake.
I think if Oda continues with the heavy plot restrictions on Zoro's character, he will inevitably destroy Zoro's character along with the story.
I think Oda should stick to what he set Zoro out to do (Be the strongest! without worrying about plot restrictions), and not change it because of MC syndrome. Kishimoto changed things because of MC syndrome(jesus Naruto), and it costed him.
Night Gai would destroy jesus Naruto from feats alone. But it is jesus Naruto who got the shine. It's actually weird how similar the events were.
Cracked bones Night Gai destroyed Madara, but plot saved Madara. Then jesus Naruto came in and outshined Gai with a kick to a orb, even though Gai's performance much surpassed anyone in the series at that time.
Broken Bones Nerfed Asura destroyed Kaido, plot saved Kaido. Then sandals Luffy came in and outshined nerfed broken bones Zoro with sandals kick, even though broken bones Zoro's feats surpasses anything sandals Luffy has ever done.
