I think after Oda saw Amazon arc, Impel Down and especially MF succeed without the SHs, he felt that he can write the manga without SH anymore as much as he wanted.
So he brought that mentality post skip and never looked back.
I can't say how much I detest these random SHs separations. Imagine after waiting years for the SHs to return (Amazon, ID, MF plus flashback arc of Luffy and Ace. All of them w/o SHs), you get into the TS, all SHs finally back together again then after 2 arcs Oda separate them for the next 2 big arc of post skip before Wano(Dressrossa and WCI).
And I'm sure he'll split them again post Wano somehow. As long as he has his darling Luffy nothing matters as much to Oda.

Oda could have shown more of his training, that would have proven totally legit from a logical perspective.
